Staff Backend Engineer, Search Quality
We are seeking a skilled Staff Backend Engineer to join our team and play a key role in improving search and recommendation quality across the platform.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the engineering strategy and execution to enhance search and recommendation features.
Design and own the architecture of scalable, low-latency systems that power discovery features.
Represent Discovery Understanding Engineering in collaborations with product managers, designers, and other teams.
Translate product goals into measurable backend solutions, run experiments, and refine features based on data.
Guide and mentor other engineers, ensuring high standards in software development and experimentation practices.
Monitor and troubleshoot search performance issues to ensure reliable and performant services.
Requirements:
Deep experience building and scaling backend systems with a focus on search and recommendations, or similar domains requiring experiment-driven iteration.
Proven track record of delivering measurable improvements to discovery systems.
Proficient in Java at a staff level, and have a strong foundation in data structures and system design.
Thrives in a data-driven, fast-paced environment and enjoys owning problems from idea to execution.
Led large-scale projects or initiatives and enjoys mentoring other engineers.
Familiar with cloud platforms and containerised services (e.g., AWS, Docker, Kubernetes).
Brings curiosity, communication skills, and a passion for empowering users through world-class product experiences.
