Job Overview

The role of a Principal Engineer involves playing a key part in guiding teams through the execution of projects, being proactive in identifying architectural improvements to search infrastructure, and defining and communicating the strategy for our search technology.

As a senior technical leader, you will collaborate with engineering teams by having an empathetic approach to helping them overcome their biggest search challenges. You will define and communicate the search technology strategy, working closely with leadership to build robust search systems that meet the company vision.

  • Technical Excellence: You will identify, prioritize, and solve systemic technical challenges such as improving search architecture and solving retrieval problems.
  • Search Technology Strategy: You will design and implement advanced search systems including architecting scalable indexing pipelines, query understanding systems, and relevance tuning mechanisms.
  • Engineering Standards: You will advocate for high standards of engineering quality ensuring that our teams deliver top-notch search experiences to customers.
Key Qualifications:
  • Extensive experience building search systems including hands-on exposure to designing and implementing search infrastructure using technologies like Elasticsearch, Solr or vector databases.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey complex thoughts on search architectures and articulate tradeoffs between query performance and relevance.
  • Experience managing complex search infrastructure including designing and delivering complex search features optimizing indexing pipelines and providing reasonable performance estimates.
  • Ability to teach others with experience mentoring junior team members to learn search best practices information retrieval concepts and improve decision-making around search architecture.
  • Pragmatic and flexible mindset comfortable with ambiguity in search requirements and able to adjust to shifting customer search needs.
