Why this role matters
The Salvation Army Australia's Homelessness Stream provides high-quality, person-centred services to people at risk, and or experiencing homelessness. We support adults and families, including accompanying children with accommodation, case management, outreach support, financial assistance, connection and referral to other specialist services.

The Western Metro Homelessness Service is the Entry Point to services for the Brimbank Melton catchment. The primary service site is home to a variety of programs from the homelessness, family violence and community streams.
About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for an identified Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person to work in partnership with Kirrip Aboriginal Corporation and Western Metropolitan Homelessness Service. This casual position is instrumental in providing an immediate crisis response to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing homelessness and assessing those at risk of homelessness and providing referrals to address their housing needs.
You will successfully
- Provide high level initial support to those experiencing homelessness and the related stresses by conducting thorough assessments, referrals and housing related information
- Allocate, monitor, and review resources to those on the prioritisation waiting list to source crisis accommodation for those in primary need
This is a casual position reporting to the Access Point Coordinator located at Kirrip Aboriginal Corporation in Melton South, VIC. Salary and conditions are in accordance with SCHADS Award level 4.
You will have
- Understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of The Salvation Army
- Understanding and connection to the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
- Lived experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of homelessness including context, causes, issues, philosophies and legislation
- Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander homelessness including causes and issues
- Knowledge of lifestyle pressures faced by disadvantaged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the community
- Previous experience working within the homelessness sector or a keen interest to develop a career in the homelessness sector
- (preferred) Certificate III or Diploma of Community Services
- Valid VIC Employee Working with Children Check
- Ability to provide proof of Eligibility to Work in Australia
- National Police Check prior to commencement
This casual position is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants only, as TSA considers that being Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for the position under the 'special measures' of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (VIC).
