Who is VCET?
With over 30 years of event management expertise, the Victorian Convention and Event Trust (VCET) is the powerhouse behind two of Victoria's most iconic venues—Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) and the soon-to-open Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre (July 2026).
The role:
The General Counsel is an influential and impactful leader at VCET, contributing to the business strategy through the provision of expert legal advice to the CEO, Leadership and Trustees as required.
Covering the full spectrum of legal and governance responsibilities, this role applies deep expertise across statutory and legislative interpretation, tendering advice, commercial licencing, contract law, policy development and dispute resolution. The ideal candidate will bring a strong commercial mindset along with familiarity and confidence in maintaining robust governance practices.
Reporting to the Chief Strategy and Governance Officer, and supporting them in their role as Trust Secretary, the General Counsel will manage the Governance function and play a key role in safeguarding the organisation's social licence to operate, while supporting commercial outcomes.
Due to the nature of this role, occasional out-of-hours work may be required. But as in-house counsel you'll have the opportunity to become a trusted advisor with a strong network of internal stakeholders.
Experience working in both commercial and government contexts is highly desirable
Key responsibilities:
Statutory, legislative and governance matters: Monitor and support compliance with statutory obligations and VPS guidelines. Lead key governance frameworks and oversee the development of key mandatory disclosures.
Commercial expertise and advice: Support the Sales team with complex commercial negotiations, managing risk while ensuring the best commercial outcomes. Help the wider business the review and assessment of significant contracts, leasing documents and other legal documents as needed,
Legal risk management and reporting: Provide advice on legal response to commercial or reputational risk, and where required, represent VCET in legal proceedings and mediations.
Leadership and people management: Provide line management, coaching and day-to-day guidance and support.
About you
Tertiary legal qualification and holding or being eligible to hold a current practising certificate as an Australian lawyer;
You bring discretion, diplomacy, and a proactive mindset to everything you do;
Significant experience in Corporate/Commercial law and experience with IP law (highly desirable);
Experience working in other Victorian Government statutory bodies (highly desirable);
Proven ability to formulate legal solutions and to effectively balance risk and reward;
High degree of commercial acumen;

Effective negotiator;
Excellent stakeholder management, analytical and negotiation skills, with the ability to work with non-lawyers to achieve outcomes.
Demonstrated ability to exercise high level judgement and discretion, and to manage compliance, contractual and legal issues
