For more than 40 years, the North Qld Export Terminal, located at the Port of Abbot Point, has demonstrated its commitment to safety, efficiency, responsibility, and partnership with the local community.
APO has been contracted by North Queensland Export Terminal Pty Ltd to manage operations of it's coal export terminal at the Port of Abbot Point—Australia's northernmost coal port—located 25 kilometres north of Bowen, between Townsville and Mackay, serving as the gateway to the Whitsundays.
We are excited to welcome a forward-thinking Learning and Development Specialist to lead the design and delivery of APO's organisational capability, training compliance, and leadership development strategy.
This is a hands-on, high-impact role for someone who thrives in a complex industrial setting and is ready to hit the ground running. You will lead the end-to-end learning function - from compliance and high-risk work training to succession planning and capability development - all while ensuring our people are equipped for operational excellence and safety.
What You'll Do:
- Assist in the design and delivery of APO's L&D strategy and programs
- Support leadership development, succession planning, and workforce capability initiatives
- Deliver and assess high-risk work and safety-critical training in a live operational environment
- Oversee mandatory and compliance training, site inductions, and apprenticeships
- Lead the selection, configuration, and optimisation of APO's Learning Management System (LMS)
- Monitor and report on training effectiveness, compliance status, and workforce capability development
- Partner with internal stakeholders and external training providers to ensure workforce readiness and regulatory compliance
What We're Looking For:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Human Resources, Safety, or Organisational Development
- Mandatory Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116)
- Demonstrated experience leading L&D strategy in a complex, operational environment
- Proven ability to train and assess in operational settings, including high-risk work tasks
- Hands-on experience in the selection, design, implementation, and management of LMS platforms
- Strong working knowledge of training compliance frameworks, WHS obligations, and RTO engagement
- Knowledge of adult learning principles, leadership development, and instructional design
- Understanding of WHS and industry training standards
- A confident communicator who can engage and influence across all levels of the organisation
- A proactive and practical mindset with a passion for building organisational capability
