The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is
seeking an
Assistant Manager, Aboriginal Policy and Strategic Support
to fill a vital role within the Aboriginal Operations Strategic Support team within the Workforce and Aboriginal Outcomes division.

About The Business Unit
Corrections Victoria operates Victoria's adult prison system, seeking to provide safe and secure containment for people in custody and an environment and programs and services that support rehabilitation. Corrections Victoria runs 11 public prisons, one transition centre, and oversees privately operated prisons. Corrections Victoria provides best practice interventions that aim to reduce the risk of reoffending, including case management informed by sound risk assessment, offence specific and offence related programs, and transition and reintegration supports.

Workforce and Aboriginal Outcomes leads the design, development, implementation and monitoring of Corrections Victoria policies, programs and services aimed at reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal people within the Victorian correctional system and manage initiatives related to the Safer prisons, Safer People, Safer Communities reform agenda. The division is made up of three teams, Cultural Review and Workforce Strategy, Naalamba Ganbu and Nerrlinggu Yilam and Aboriginal Operational Strategic Supports.

About The Role
The Assistant Manager, Aboriginal Policy and Strategic Support sits within the Aboriginal Operational Strategic Supports team which is responsible for policy, contracts and procurement, governance and secretariat functions and planning and reporting for Aboriginal programs and services.

As the Assistant Manager Aboriginal Policy and Strategic Support, you will develop and monitor policies, be responsible for strategic planning, program monitoring and reporting and providing high-level strategic advice and complex reports to executive management and Ministers. You will have oversight of a number of program support functions including contracts and procurement, governance, data collation and analysis as well as secretariat and reporting responsibilities.

You will liaise with multiple internal and external stakeholders including Aboriginal Justice Caucus (AJC) and Regional Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committees (RAJACs) as a key stakeholder in relation to policy development and programs and services reporting.

Some Of Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Lead the development of policies, guidelines and processes relating to people in custody.
  • Lead the development of business and strategic planning processes for the Workforce and Aboriginal Outcomes division.
  • Oversee the development and review of programs and other support services for Aboriginal people in custody including consultation and reporting functions.
  • Support Aboriginal organisations delivering justice programs through contract management and working groups to achieve better outcomes for Aboriginal people in custody and transitions back to community.
  • Promote and seek endorsement of policy and program development and implementation through the Aboriginal Justice Forum (AJF), RAJACs, project working groups and committees.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Experience in planning, and the development and implementation of policy.
  • Experience in business functions such as contract management, data collation and analysis, reporting and secretariat/governance activities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal community, both society and culture, and the issues impacting it.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and work effectively with the Victorian Aboriginal community.
