Our team is at the forefront of technology adoption at Xero and comprises some of the best and brightest technology talent in the locations where we operate.

This role sits within one of our Shared Platform pods, which are collectively focused on delivering a low-friction approach to achieving a high-quality, consistent platform for Xero teams to grow their products. This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll contribute to building automation and improving the developer experience. You'll help maintain and evolve the infrastructure powering these tools, ensuring they're scalable, secure, and easy to adopt.

As a Software Engineer at Xero, you'll play a crucial role in building reliable, scalable solutions. You'll contribute directly to our products while helping your team adopt strong development practices. You'll work closely with senior engineers, delivery teams, and stakeholders to uplift how tools are provisioned, integrated into pipelines, and supported at scale.

This specific pod is responsible for critical products like Mail, push notifications, SMS, and event-driven platforms across the Xero landscape.

As an Engineer, you'll focus on expanding your knowledge and skills while contributing to engineering excellence at Xero. We believe a solid technical foundation and a strong growth mindset are the keys to success in Software Engineering. You won't find a long list of "must-have" tech requirements below

Key responsibilities:

  • Focus on learning and growth:
    Continuously expand your knowledge and skills, contribute to Xero's standard for engineering excellence, and support your team in building products together.
  • Deliver high-quality software:
    Apply your experience as a Software Engineer to deliver high-quality, scalable software solutions.
  • Build modern engineering stacks:
    Gain hands-on experience designing and building modern engineering stacks, with exposure to platforms like AWS being highly beneficial.
  • Communicate effectively:
    Clearly and effectively convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, including engineers, product managers, and stakeholders.
  • Develop and manage applications:
    Undertake software application development for our suite of products (including new ones), contributing to new or improved experiences for our internal and external customers. You'll help build and manage software that solves engineering problems at scale.
  • Automate and innovate:
    Seek clarity on technical complexities and demonstrate smart ways to automate solutions.
  • Ensure system reliability:
    Demonstrate proficiency in on-call practices and a strong understanding of monitoring and observability tooling for proactively managing and troubleshooting production systems at scale.
  • Design scalable products:
    Contribute to or facilitate discussions on application design and implementation, with a focus on scaling products effectively.
  • Understand the full development lifecycle:
    Possess a deep understanding of the full development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, and deployment.

Technologies You'll Have the Opportunity to Use:

  • AWS and Kubernetes
  • C# and TypeScript
  • Terraform for Infrastructure (and everything else) as Code
  • Event-driven applications (using Apache Kafka)
