Primary objective
Manage the regional delivery of the Rangeland Monitoring Program through the management, coordination and implementation
of a comprehensive field monitoring program, to evaluate and report on land condition and lease administration matters.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Plan and implement the NT Rangeland Monitoring Program for pastoral leases in the NT.
- Lead and undertake fieldwork (over the field season) on pastoral stations to monitor land condition, including the assessment
of species composition, validation of remote sensing products and collection of pastoral infrastructure data.
Identify key pastoral species, dominant vegetation, land systems and landscape processes within the NT rangelands.
Ensure a very high standard of data collection and protection while in the field, and management, transfer and interpretation
while in the office.
Write high quality land condition reports (over the office-based period) for each pastoral station monitored.
Use ArcGIS software to produce high quality maps, analyse data and interpret remote sensing imagery.
Manage the team's work program and be responsible for managing staff in a supervisory role.
Develop and maintain positive relationships with team members, station managers and pastoral industry stakeholders.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Tertiary qualification in natural resource management, agricultural or environmental science, or related field, or relevant
demonstrated experience.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of land condition assessment and land management issues in the NT, including interactions
between grazing practices, fire and seasonal conditions and their potential impacts on rangeland ecosystems.
3. Demonstrated experience in a range of computer systems, including GIS, GPS or tablet computers for data collection,
vegetation monitoring and land condition assessment.
4. Demonstrated experience in leading a team, and to plan, manage and deliver a comprehensive work program, both field and
office based.
- Demonstrated experience and willingness to work safely and effectively in remote localities, in sometimes difficult conditions
for extended periods of time.
6. Demonstrated ability to interpret and collate technical data to prepare high quality technical reports and documents.
7. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally with a range of stakeholders, especially people
from diverse cultural backgrounds.
8. NT driver licence or equivalent and demonstrated ability to drive a manual, four-wheel drive vehicle.
Desirable
1. Knowledge of the pastoral industry in the Northern Territory and rangeland livestock production.
2. Experience in assessing vegetation communities, identifying plants and monitoring land condition, preferably in arid and/or
savannah environments, or the ability to rapidly upskill botanically in these environments.

for parts of the field season (approx. May to September).
