Primary objective

Provide high level advice and consultancy services to support the maintenance, ongoing improvement and promotion of the

agency's Work Health and Safety (WHS) Management System.

Context statement

The Strategic Services, Governance and Risk unit provides high level business advice and consultancy services to support

emergency and risk management, work health and safety and boards and committee functions. The unit also manages the

agency's physical assets and facilities and delivers quality and timely strategic policy advice and research services that

contribute to achieving the agency's objectives and strategic priorities whilst ensuring good governance systems are

implemented and maintained.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Ensure the agency WHS Management System is compliant with all relevant legislative requirements and standards, and

risks are managed within a risk management framework and regularly monitored and reported to relevant governance

committees and executive and senior management.

  1. Provide strategic and policy advice and recommendations to all levels of WHS management to improve safety

performance, reduce risk and play an integral role in influencing a shared and committed, positive safety culture across

the agency.

  1. Monitor and regularly report on WHS key performance indicators, with associated data analysis and recommendations.
  2. Ensure effective WHS inductions and that training is procured/delivered to meet legislative requirements and agency

needs.

5. Develop, implement, and maintain specialist material including policy and online resources to support all aspects of WHS

management.

6. Ability to develop WHS tactical programs for priority risks including managing hazard inspections, internal system audits,

risk assessments and investigations aligned with key performance targets.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Experience and knowledge in WHS Management particularly in developing and implementing WHS Systems.

2. High level written and verbal communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills with sound conceptual, analytical

and research skills.

3. Proven ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation in a WHS environment.

4. Demonstrated planning, problem solving and organisational skills including the capacity to successfully manage multiple,

complex and high priority tasks concurrently.

5. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain key relationships with clients, team members and WHS committees to

positively influence WHS practices.

6. Successful experience in developing and maintaining effective WHS training needs for workforce orientation and

induction programs, coaching, mentoring, and supporting staff to continually improve the WHS culture.

Desirable

1. Tertiary qualifications relevant to the position for example Diploma of Work, Health, and Safety.

  1. Sound knowledge of the agency, its responsibilities with NT and Commonwealth agencies and other key stakeholders.
