Branch Manager – Dry Cleaning & Laundry Operations

Location: Canberra, ACT

Reports To: Business Owner

Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Summary

We are seeking a proactive and experienced Branch Manager to lead the daily operations of our dry cleaning and laundry store in Canberra. This role is ideal for someone passionate about operational excellence, customer satisfaction, and team leadership. The successful candidate will play a key role in driving growth, maintaining compliance, and delivering precision in every garment handled.

Key ResponsibilitiesOperational Excellence

  • Oversee daily store operations, including opening and closing procedures using a detailed checklist.
  • Ensure dry store and commercial laundry operations are running smoothly and efficiently.
  • Operate and supervise the use of commercial laundry equipment, including:

  • Commercial ironers (flatwork finishers)

  • Industrial washers and dryers
  • Folding and pressing machines

  • Prepare and execute the daily work plan for staff and production.

  • Manage deliveries to clients as required, ensuring timely and accurate service.
  • Ensure all dry-cleaned and laundered garments are delivered on time, every time, with precision and care.

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure full compliance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws applicable in Canberra and ACT.
  • Maintain and enforce proper use of spill kits, chemical handling procedures, and water contamination prevention protocols.
  • Ensure all staff are trained in the safe handling, storage, and disposal of perchloroethylene (PERC) and hydrocarbon solvents, including:

  • Avoiding inhalation and skin contact through use of appropriate PPE (gloves, goggles, respirators).

  • Monitoring air quality and ensuring proper ventilation systems are in place to reduce vapor exposure.
  • Using closed-loop dry cleaning machines and maintaining them regularly to prevent leaks and emissions.
  • Following emergency procedures for spills and leaks, including containment and reporting protocols.
  • Maintaining Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all chemicals and ensuring they are accessible and up-to-date.

  • Conduct regular training sessions and safety briefings to ensure all staff are aware of chemical hazards and safe work practices.

  • Work closely with the Dryclean Institute of Australia to stay aligned with industry standards and innovations.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise, coach, and support junior staff members to ensure high performance and development.
  • Maintain and manage staff rosters and lead schedules to ensure adequate coverage and productivity.
  • Conduct regular team meetings, safety briefings, and performance reviews.

Client & Contract Management

  • Manage commercial contracts, including tracking variations and ensuring service delivery aligns with client expectations.
  • Handle client billing accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Respond to customer queries professionally and promptly, ensuring high satisfaction.

Key Deliverables

  • Smooth and efficient daily operations across dry cleaning and commercial laundry.
  • Full compliance with WHS and environmental regulations.
  • Accurate and timely deliveries and billing.
  • High staff engagement and development.
  • Strong relationships with clients and industry partners.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a supervisory or managerial role in dry cleaning, laundry, or a related industry.
  • Strong knowledge of dry cleaning plant operations and commercial laundry equipment.
  • Familiarity with WHS laws, spill response, and environmental compliance.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends if required.

Desirable

  • Certification in WHS or Environmental Management.
  • Experience with environmentally friendly cleaning technologies.
  • First Aid and Fire Warden training.
