Head of Operations

Description
Build the engine that powers Australia's fastest-growing education company.
Does uncertainty and ambiguity in businesses excite you? Do you enjoy the art of building systems, processes, and people (and not just maintaining them)? Have you ever looked up to organisations like Amazon and Apple and always wanted to define your own standard of "operational excellence" and "customer centricity"? If you answered yes to even one, then you might be a great fit, but if you answered yes to all three, then you're probably Tim Cook, and this newly-created, Head of Operations role is definitely for you.
At Contour, our growth has been explosive, driven by a product that works and a brand that parents and students trust. So far, our operations have been founder-led, built on gritty, 'roll-up-your-sleeves' execution that has propelled us into the AFR's 100 fastest growing companies for four years running.
Now, we're looking for a world-class operator to take the reins. A master of systems, a data-driven efficiency expert, and a natural leader who can build a high-performing, scalable operational function from the ground up. Someone who can erect departments and initiatives from scratch, turning our high-growth scale-up into a well-oiled machine where excellence becomes automatic.
This role is for someone who thrives on building the 'engine' of the business. You will own everything from our physical campus network and student experience ecosystem to our tutor workforce management and internal business systems. You'll be the architect of our scale, the guardian of our "student-first" promise, and a key leader in our national expansion.
We'll give you everything you need to build an operational engine others look to for inspiration, and set the benchmark for what amazing looks like across an entire industry.
Who Are We
At Contour, we're reshaping education, one student at a time.
Born from the frustration of students who knew the system could be better, we set out to build what we once wished existed: tutoring that actually works. Not generic classes. Not recycled notes. Not overpriced, overcrowded rooms with an out-of-touch teacher who couldn't relate. But a complete ecosystem of tutoring, resources, and support, meticulously designed to help every student reach their full potential.
Since 2020, over 10,000+ students have trusted Contour to guide their academic journey, and we've grown to over 300+ team members. We've produced hundreds of 99+ ATARs, tutored the World-Record UCAT scorer, and placed more students into medical school than any school in Australia.
Our growth is a testament to the simple philosophy: Put the student first, always. Everything we design, from our world-class tutor-training programs to our purpose-built campuses, exists to help students master content faster, perform with confidence, and even rekindle the joy of learning.
Contour is a group of three brands united by one goal: to give every student the best chance to achieve their full potential:
- Contour Education: Reshaping how students master their high school subjects with small-group tutoring, structured resources, and 1-on-1 support across Maths, Science, and English.
- Contour MedPrep: Reshaping medical preparation with a proven, step-by-step pathway through the UCAT, interviews, and admissions, led by a team of 100+ medical students.
- Contour TestPrep: Reshaping test preparation, starting with the selective entry exam, through rigorous tutoring, mock exams, and data-driven feedback to give students a decisive advantage.
This is Contour. Built by students, for students.
What You Will Do
As the Head of Operations, you will be the architect of our business engine and leader of our commercial and operational teams.
- Lead & Develop Commercial & Operational Teams: Recruit, mentor, and scale leaders across Sales, Customer Service, Campus Operations, and Digital Operations. You'll foster a culture of ownership and build our future IT, Project Management, and RevOps functions from the ground up.
- Architect the Business Engine: Design and execute the integrated strategy for commercial and operational functions. Create the "playbook" that seamlessly connects Sales, Service, and Academic Delivery, partnering with Marketing (on GTM) and Finance (on budgeting) for rapid, repeatable national scale.
- Own the Full Student/Parent Lifecycle & P&L: Take full ownership of the business P&L, from lead to alumni. Lead the Sales Managers to drive student growth and the Campus/Operation Managers to deliver a world-class, scalable student and campus experience (think Apple and Ritz-Carlton).
- Co-create the Annual Plan: Partner with the founders to set the company's strategic plan, budget, and targets. You'll translate this vision into an executable operational plan, implementing a company-wide goal-setting framework (think OKRs) to ensure alignment and accountability.
- Build the "Well-Oiled Machine": Lead the digital ops team (CRM, data, automations) to design and build the core business systems and tech stack. You'll transform data into insights and automate processes to drive efficiency and self-sufficient operation. You'll also spearhead our HubSpot migration with our in-house implementation manager.
- Drive National Expansion: Own and execute the operational playbook for launching new campuses nationwide. Manage site selection, fit-out, local team recruitment, and launch logistics, ensuring quality and consistency alongside the National Campus Manager.
- Master Workforce Management: Oversee scalable systems for recruiting, training, quality assurance, and scheduling our 300+ (and growing) workforce, partnering with the Tutoring and People & Culture team to build a world-class, repeatable delivery model.
- Champion Data-Driven Excellence: Establish and own critical business KPIs (sales conversion, retention, utilisation, CSAT, operational margin). Use data to set ambitious targets and drive continuous improvement.
- Build the Foundations for Scale: Develop and own the scalable 'back-of-house' infrastructure, including risk management, national compliance (e.g., WHS, child safety), and core legal/HR frameworks to support a multi-site, 300+ person team.
What You Will Bring
- A Proven Commercial & Operational Leader: You have 8-10+ years in senior leadership (e.g., CEO/COO, GM, VP, Head of Ops) with a clear track record of scaling a B2C service or multi-site business with a heavy tech stack.
- A Strategic Partner & Influencer: You're more than an operator; you're a strategic peer to the founders who can co-create the annual plan. You partner with other leaders (Marketing, Finance, Academics) to build consensus, influence roadmaps, and drive complex cross-functional initiatives.
- A Player-Coach & Culture Carrier: You have proven experience recruiting and developing cross-functional leaders. You can confidently mentor a sales exec, a systems analyst, and a campus manager. You're also a natural teacher, unafraid to proactively 'tutor' the founders and help the business learn what world-class operations look like.
- A Master of Business Architecture: You're a "first-principles" thinker who lives for building systems. You have deep, hands-on expertise in designing the business tech stack (CRM, automations, data) to connect every function and enable scale. You also have the maturity to build necessary guardrails - managing risk, compliance, and legal frameworks - to ensure sustainable growth.
- Commercially & Data-Driven: You're an expert at managing a full P&L, with a deep understanding of both revenue drivers (sales) and cost levers (operations). You're obsessed with measuring what matters and using data to make decisions and achieve operational excellence.
- An Owner: You have a full-ownership mentality and a "get it done" attitude. You're just as comfortable designing a multi-year commercial strategy as you are rolling up your sleeves to fix a broken sales-to-service handoff.
- Customer-Obsessed: You understand that systems, processes, and sales targets exist to serve the customer. You build an engine that creates a seamless, premium, and delightful student and parent experience.
- Ambitious & Resilient: You thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment where you can make a significant impact. You see challenges as opportunities and bring bold, innovative ideas to the table.
- Bonus Points: Experience in education, high-growth startups, multi-site retail, big tech or franchise models
Why You Will Love It
- High Impact: This isn't a "keep the lights on" role. You will be the key architect of our national scale, building the engine that allows us to impact thousands more students and families.
- Ownership & Autonomy: You'll have the greenfield opportunity and ownership to build the entire operational function for a national brand, working in direct collaboration with the co-founders.
- Clear Path for Growth: This is a pivotal role with significant growth opportunities. As the organisation expands nationally, this position is designed to evolve as well.
- Competitive Package: We offer a competitive salary for top-tier talent and a flexible, hybrid environment where we value output, not hours at a desk. Our supportive benefits include an EAP, birthday/loyalty leave, and lifestyle allowances.
- A Vision to Believe In: We're ambitious, passionate, and on a mission to reshape education in Australia. Our goal is for Contour to become the most trusted name in education nationwide.
If this challenge sparks your inner operational fire - your drive to build something truly excellent and take your career to the next level - this is the role for you
