DEVEN PTY LTD operates the Hecho En Mexico Newtown restaurant, part of a well-known Mexican dining group recognised for vibrant flavours, fresh ingredients and a lively dining experience. Our Newtown venue is expanding quickly, and we are seeking a skilled Chef to support our kitchen leadership team.

About the Role

The Chef will play a key role in the daily operation of the kitchen. You will ensure high-quality food preparation, lead junior cooks and assist with menu planning and kitchen management.

Key Responsibilities (aligned with ANZSCO Chef

  • Prepare and cook all menu items to high standards, ensuring flavour, presentation and portion consistency.
  • Assist with planning and developing menus, seasonal dishes and specials.
  • Use a range of cooking methods such as grilling, sautéing, frying and roasting in line with menu requirements.
  • Supervise, coordinate and participate in food preparation and cooking.
  • Ensure dishes meet portion, quality and presentation standards.
  • Coordinate workflow and section responsibilities during service to maintain smooth, efficient and timely food production in a high-volume environment.
  • Train, mentor and oversee kitchen staff to maintain consistent performance.
  • Manage stock ordering, receiving, storage, rotation and minimisation of wastage.
  • Maintain strict food safety, hygiene and workplace health & safety compliance.
  • Monitor ingredient quality and maintain kitchen equipment.
  • Contribute to rostering, cost control and general kitchen efficiency.
  • Support the Head Chef and assume duties in their absence.

About You

  • Minimum 3 years' experience as a Chef, Sous Chef or Chef de Partie in a busy commercial kitchen.
  • Strong culinary skills with good knowledge of kitchen operations.
  • Ability to lead and support a kitchen team calmly and professionally.
  • Excellent communication and organisational abilities.
  • Passion for quality food; interest in Mexican cuisine is an advantage.
  • Able to work evenings and weekends.
