Wildlife Welfare Coordinator

Reporting to WIRES Head of Facilities Administration and Compliance, WIRES Welfare Coordinator is dedicated to ensuring best practice rescue and rehabilitation processes are in place to optimise welfare outcomes.
WIRES Head Office is based in Brookvale NSW. The role has a hybrid work structure with the opportunities for successful applicants to work remotely from home or from office as needed, based on demands of specific tasks.
Field work is an integral part of this role, and a successful applicant may be required to work remotely on occasion to conduct inspections.
This is a 12 month full-time position with potential for extension.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Supporting WIRES staff and volunteers regarding animal welfare related enquiries.
- Assessing and managing risks to compliance in order ensure best practice welfare outcomes are achieved.
- Liaising with volunteers to assist with reporting of animals in care, monitor death, euthanasia and release outcomes and ensure positive animal welfare processes.
- Ensuring database is kept up to date with accurate information at all times.
- Development of educational/support resources for members that address identified key welfare issues withing the rehabilitation sector.
- Conducting regular inspections focused on proactive, positive support of volunteers to improve the outcomes for wildlife under rehabilitation.
- The capacity to be deployed to provide emergency rescue and response assistance for urgent rescues or during major emergencies.
- Managing community complaints and issues related to animal welfare, referring to the RSPCA, AWL, NPWS or organisations as required, following up additional information from the public, volunteers and vets as needed and monitoring to confirm case outcomes.
- Supporting WIRES Rescue Office regarding animal welfare related enquiries
- Assist with the coordination of animal welfare as needed at WIRES managed facilities.
- Performing other duties and managing key welfare projects to completion as requested by management.
Key competencies:
- Extensive experience in an animal welfare related field or a regulatory environment
- Detailed understanding of all wildlife rehabilitation Codes of Practice
- Highly organised, reliable, efficient & detail oriented with excellent written & verbal communication skills.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in veterinary science, animal welfare, biology, or related field (desirable)
- Current driver's licence essential for field inspections and emergency response activities
- Strong conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to multi-task
- Demonstrated ability to improve animal welfare outcomes and work well with a range of stakeholders.
- Positive attitude & ability to work in a team.
- Committed to prompt rescue and care services prioritising welfare at all times.
- Awareness of the importance of data integrity and accuracy
- Willingness to work cooperatively and collaboratively across the organisation.
- Must have unrestricted rights to work in Australia
