The Opportunity
Are you a strategic finance leader ready to shape the future of financial shared services across NSW Government? We're seeking a visionary
Director Accounting & Ledger Management
to lead transformation, drive operational excellence, and deliver high-impact financial services across a complex, multi-agency environment.
Government Shared Services (GSS) is the home of essential back-office services for around 80,000 employees across more than 100 NSW Government agencies. With harmonised business processes and a whole-of-government approach, GSS delivers reliable and efficient transactional services that support public sector performance.
The GSS Business Process Operations (BPO) branch delivers scalable and efficient transactional services. Focused on continuous improvement, automation, and service excellence, the GSS BPO drives optimal customer experience and operational performance across the shared services landscape, creating value and enabling NSW Government outcomes.
This role provides strategic oversight and leadership across core financial functions including general accounting, tax management, master data, reconciliations, fixed assets, and workers compensation. The Director leads a team of 6 direct reports and influences a broader workforce of approximately 120 professionals, ensuring financial integrity, compliance, and service excellence.
The successful candidate will stabilise and optimise finance shared services, resolve complex operational issues, and drive long-term transformation through automation and customer-centric service design.
In this role, you will:
- Lead the delivery of high-quality, reliable finance shared services aligned with customer expectations.
- Oversee statutory compliance, financial reporting, reconciliations, and audit support.
- Drive continuous improvement through technology, automation, and performance frameworks.
- Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders including the Auditor-General, ATO, banking providers, and strategic vendors.
- Support onboarding programs such as GovConnect and NSW Education Standards Authority and contribute to broader transformation initiatives.
The leader we're seeking has:
- Extensive experience in public sector finance shared services.
- Deep understanding of statutory compliance, financial reporting, and operational finance.
- Tertiary qualifications in accounting and eligibility for CPA Australia or CA ANZ membership.
- Proven strategic leadership in large, complex organisations.
- Experience in service transformation and automation.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and vendor management.
- Familiarity with government financial systems and reporting frameworks.
This is a rare opportunity to lead a high-impact function within a dynamic and forward-thinking government division. You'll be at the forefront of financial transformation, working collaboratively with senior leaders across government to deliver services that matter.
Your application should include an up-to-date CV which clearly details your relevant skills and experience to this position. A cover letter is not mandatory but preferred.
