The Healthy & Safe Start team (Pregnancy & Early Years) is an integrated response and support program for vulnerable high risk pregnant women, birthing parents and their families. The team provides tailored support to individual needs including domestic & family violence, homelessness and housing and specialist family support with a perinatal and health focus. The team provides information, referrals, planned support and advocacy to assist women to find and or maintain suitable long-term housing, establish a home and address complex needs that put them at risk of intervention from the Department of Child Safety. The team works in an integrated response model to support with participant and family through the systems which significantly impact on their lives, such as child protection, family law, domestic violence orders, justice, income support, education and healthcare.

DFV Specialist Advocates in the Women, Children & Families Cluster, work from contemporary evidence based best practice models, providing an array of services including immediate response and case management, outreach, groups, safety planning, information and referral and psycho-social education on the dynamics of domestic and family violence.  

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Domestic and Family Violence Specialist to work as part of an integrated response and support program for vulnerable high risk pregnant women, birthing parents and their families. Work with vulnerable women who are pregnant, birthing parents who may also be currently parenting a young child / children and who have complex issues impacting on their ability to care for themselves and their families. Participants referred maybe at high risk of becoming involved with the Department of Child Safety. Women maybe referred through a QPS response to DFV, risk assessment and safety planning through the use of the CRASF assessment tool will be an integral part of your role.

This is a full time employment opportunity until December 2026at Level 5 of the SCHADS Award.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide assertive outreach case management to pregnant women, birthing parents and their families.
  • Provide specialised Domestic and Family Violence education, training and case consultations to the Healthy & Safe Start Team.
  • Provide expert advice and assistance when required with screening and responding to risk and safety planning with to pregnant and early parenting women and birthing parents, experiencing DFV, including those experiencing homelessness.
  • Foster dynamic, positive, outcomes through a focussed team approach to work towards the mission of the team and Micah Projects.

Essential Criteria

  • Degree qualifications in social work, psychology, social sciences or relevant experience, knowledge, and in‐depth understanding of domestic and family violence dynamics.
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012, The Child Protection Act 1999, and the Family Law Act.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in understanding the impact of domestic violence on women, children and family functioning and the ability to communicate, problem solve and negotiate with families in achieving improved safety and wellbeing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply current theory and practice relating to domestic and family violence and a gendered analysis of this issue, including using a trauma informed approach.
