Cyber Security Engineer

Brisbane, Queensland, Australia HPX Group Full time $80,000 - $120,000 per year

We are looking for a Cyber Security Engineer to be the security champion within our IT Operations team.

This is a unique role where you will be the dedicated security specialist working alongside our system administrators, driving security improvements across our infrastructure and operations. You will take ownership of our security posture, working with our third-party managed SOC whilst leading internal security initiatives, vulnerability management, and security projects that protect our business and clients.

Please note: This is not a role within a large Security Operations Centre (SOC). We outsource our SOC as a managed service. We need someone who thrives as the security subject matter expert within a broader IT operations team, someone who can work independently to improve our security posture whilst collaborating closely with system administrators.

The role

In this role, you will be the bridge between security and operations, bringing security expertise to a team of talented system administrators. Your technical knowledge spanning both security engineering and system administration will be essential as you manage our vulnerability and patching programmes, investigate security alerts alongside our third-party SOC, conduct security reviews, and respond to client security questionnaires. You will have the opportunity to identify security gaps, design solutions, and run projects that meaningfully improve our security posture. With strong support from the IT Operations Manager and the organisation, you will be empowered to shape our security strategy and build robust security capabilities.

Our preference is for someone located in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane; however, we will also consider applications from candidates located in Perth. You will have the option to work from home or work from the office.

About you

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has hands-on experience in both system administration and security engineering, with a strong understanding of infrastructure, operating systems, and security controls.
  • Demonstrated experience in vulnerability management, patch management, and security incident response. Experience with ISO27001, SOC2 and Essential 8 frameworks is desirable.
  • Can work effectively as the sole security specialist within a broader IT team, comfortable being the go-to person for security matters.
  • Has experience collaborating with managed security service providers or third-party SOCs to investigate alerts, triage incidents, and implement remediation actions.
  • Can conduct thorough security reviews of systems, applications, and processes, identifying risks and recommending practical improvements.
  • Is skilled at completing client security questionnaires and assessments, translating technical security controls into clear business language.
  • Enjoys running security improvement projects from conception to completion, working collaboratively with system administrators to implement changes.
  • Is a strong communicator who can explain security risks and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Prefers working in a small, collaborative team where they can make a real impact by driving security improvements across the organisation.
  • Is proactive and self-motivated, able to identify security opportunities and drive initiatives without needing constant direction.
  • Stays current with emerging security threats, vulnerabilities, and best practices, and understands how to apply them in a practical business context.

We have built a high-growth, people-centric business that maximises our 'people experience' (PX) to foster a vibrant culture, putting our people at the forefront of everything we do.

In turn, this enables our people to do their best work, which ultimately makes our clients happy. This is a win-win-win.

We put our people's experience at the centre of everything we do.

What's in it for you

  • Be mentored in a supportive environment, with access to quality work and professional development opportunities.
  • A fun, collaborative and high-performing team environment with regular social events, training days and team retreats.
  • Flexible working arrangements.
  • A competitive remuneration package, including equity pursuant to the Group's ESS.
  • An extra week's leave, as part of our employee personal development programme.
  • Full-day birthday leave.
