Our Client:

Our client is a global energy transition organization who is expanding their Australian business and who are looking for an experienced senior legal counsel who will lead their country legal function. This high impact role will have high visibility from local and global leadership with opportunities to support and drive the growth of the renewable energy industry in Australia

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver legal counsel and risk analysis on renewable energy project development, permitting processes, regulatory approvals, EPC/O&M contracts, and compliance with Australia's energy laws and regulations.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate diverse legal agreements, including NDAs, MoUs, PPAs, EPC/O&M contracts, consultancy contracts, and submissions to government bodies.
  • Liaise with and coordinate approvals or regulatory requirements with key Australian authorities such as DCCEEW, AER, CER, as well as state and local government agencies.
  • Provide legal support for due diligence, joint venture arrangements, and structuring of investments in both project development and acquisitions.
  • Oversee compliance with Australian legal and regulatory frameworks, including corporate, employment, and environmental law, and manage corporate secretarial issues with external counsel.
  • Assist in resolving disputes, managing claims, addressing regulatory issues, and overseeing relationships with external legal advisors.
  • Deliver legal training for internal teams and contribute to shaping company-wide legal, compliance, and governance policies and best practices.

Requirements:

  • Qualified lawyer admitted to practice in Australia, holding an LL.B. or J.D. from a recognized law school.
  • Minimum of 5 years' post-qualification experience, ideally gained in a top-tier law firm or multinational corporation; prior exposure to negotiating and drafting WTG and BESS sales and O&M contracts within the energy, infrastructure, or construction sectors is advantageous.
  • In-depth knowledge of Australian energy sector regulations, corporate law, land use, and related compliance frameworks.
  • Proven experience working with government bodies and regulators, with strong familiarity in licensing, permitting, and compliance procedures.
  • Strong command of English, with excellent legal drafting, negotiation, and document review capabilities.
  • Highly self-driven and results-focused, with the ability to manage legal matters independently.
  • Effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills, capable of collaborating across both local and international teams.
