Job description:
You're only human.
It's a strange thing to say, because us humans are capable of incredible things. And at Medibank, we know our greatest potential lies in the people who work with us.
We strive to make real, fundamental change, driven by a simple purpose: to create the best health and wellbeing for all of Australia.
The Opportunity - Senior Legal Counsel - Privacy
We are looking for a Senior Legal Counsel to join the Medibank Privacy team. Reporting to the Managing Counsel, Privacy Legal, the Senior Legal Counsel will lead the provision of strategic, high quality, commercial and timely legal services to key teams within the enterprise, supported by a Legal Counsel (direct report).
Here at Medibank, we have a huge focus on health and wellbeing. This means flexible working and continuous improvement to our ways of working. One of the exciting initiatives our team is currently trialling to support this is, the 4 Day Work Week Trial.
Our employees are empowered to decide if their day is best spent working from home or the office. We don't go for mandated office attendance here at Medibank, but we will need you to come along to team days and events when they're on
Where you can add value
In this role you'll be uniquely positioned within the Privacy Legal team while collaborating with key business teams and will be responsible for leading the delivery of privacy legal services. This includes advising on privacy issues and risks related to commercial projects, disputes, and compliance with legal obligations, such as conducting Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs), advising on data retention, and consent proposals.
The role also involves advising on potential privacy incidents and preparing necessary notices to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC). Additionally, the Senior Legal Counsel will support Medibank's internal privacy framework and education program, contribute to the development of relevant procedures, and design self-service tools.
About you
We are looking for a candidate who has a continuous innovation and improvement approach to delivering privacy legal services, including through technology, self-help tools and streamlining processes. You'll have a strong client service orientation and will be comfortable working autonomously, leading strategic legal advice, and supervising junior team members. In addition, you'll have a solid understanding of regulatory expectations, prioritising legal versus commercial imperatives, and the ability to develop practical solutions to complex issues is essential.
Your experience
- You have at least 8 years post admission experience, with at least 3 years' experience specifically practicing privacy law
- A strong understanding of and experience with the interrelationship of privacy and areas such as consumer laws, marketing, data governance, IT security, data analytics and ethics.
- Proficiency in delivering complex legal advice to multiple stakeholders with both legal and commercial repercussions.
(Applications close COB Wednesday November 12)
