Your role
The Senior Legal, Information and Investigation Officer provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to the resolution of disputes between clients and lawyers, and the regulation of the legal profession in NSW. As a senior lawyer within the Office of the NSW Legal Services Commissioner, you will play a key role in the investigation of alleged misconduct, lead initiatives to enhance digital knowledge sharing, liaise with IT providers, and explore innovative uses of Artificial Intelligence. What You'll Do
As part of the Office of the NSW Legal Services Commissioner (OLSC), you will conduct complex and sensitive investigations into complaints about lawyers and provide efficient and effective legal services to support the complaint handling functions of the Legal Services Commissioner. You will also contribute to policy development and law reform in the area of legal profession regulation; specifically with respect to the specialised areas of information, technology and Artificial Intelligence.

You Will Also

  • Conduct preliminary assessment of complaints about lawyers and/or law practices and allocate to staff for action, giving advice as to appropriate lines of inquiry and strategy.
  • Conduct complex, contentious or sensitive investigations into complaints about lawyers and/or law practices and recommend to the Commissioner whether disciplinary proceedings should be initiated or a determination made under the Legal Profession Uniform Law.
  • Maintain and manage a precedent library; develop innovative methods of knowledge sharing and implementations of digital systems to improve knowledge sharing; provide recommendations to improve processes and procedures to ensure productivity; act as the key point of contact between the office and our external IT provider during system upgrades and changes.
  • Identify use cases for Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies and explore the feasibility, benefits and cost of such tools; develop and maintain expert knowledge on AI and related technologies, including as to its use or misuse in legal practice and any professional conduct issues arising.
  • Conduct internal reviews under the Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW).
  • Provide high level legal advice to the Commissioner, senior management and staff on the interpretation and application of relevant legislation and accompanying Regulations and Rules; provide high level advice on other legal issues arising from complaints in a variety of areas as required (including as to information, technology and the use of AI).
  • Contribute to submissions in response to inquiries and consultations conducted by external agencies as required and contribute to the preparation of educational materials for use by staff, the legal profession and members of the public; present seminars/workshops to law students, lawyers, other professionals and the public.
  • Consider and respond to external requests for information, whether made by subpoena or other process, the Government Information (Public Access) Act or any other relevant State or Federal legislation.

What We're Looking For

  • Legal qualifications and current Unsupervised Australian practising certificate, or eligibility to apply for an Unsupervised Australian practising certificate.
  • Knowledge of relevant Legal Profession Legislation, Regulations and Rules
  • Experience in providing high level legal advice, preferably in a complaint handling entity, Government department, statutory body or law practice.
  • Experience in dealing with Artificial Intelligence and Information Technology in legal practice.

  • National Criminal History Record Check in accordance with the Disability Inclusion Act 2014
  • Working with Children Check clearance in accordance with the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012
