The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

What Will You Do?

In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing Care & Protection/Family Law Practice, providing culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. Each day you will:

  • Deliver high-quality legal services in Care & Protection and Family Law matters, including advice, casework, representation, and participation in alternative dispute resolution.
  • Provide culturally appropriate outreach and early intervention, including community legal education, clinics, and referrals to support services.
  • Manage case files and administrative tasks in line with ALS policies, practice standards, and legislative requirements.
  • Contribute to law reform, policy development, and internal procedural reviews related to Care & Protection and Family Law.
  • Collaborate effectively as part of a legal team and engage in ongoing professional development to maintain legal practice standards.
  • Uphold ethical practice and compliance with ALS values, WHS, EEO, and all relevant legislation and guidelines.

Who Are We Looking For?

We seek a dedicated and skilled professional who deeply understands the cultural, social, and historical contexts affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. You will bring both legal expertise and cultural sensitivity, demonstrated by your ability to:

  • Legal qualifications and a current NSW Practising Certificate, with sound knowledge of Care & Protection and Family Law legislation.
  • Demonstrated advocacy skills and the ability to represent Aboriginal clients in court and tribunal settings.
  • Strong communication, research, and analytical skills, with the ability to prepare high-quality legal documents and manage complex legal issues.
  • Proven ability to work independently under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage a diverse workload in a high-volume environment.
  • Cultural competency and understanding of the legal issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with a commitment to respectful and appropriate service delivery.
  • Valid NSW driver's licence and willingness to travel to metropolitan and regional areas, including overnight stays as required.

Why Join Us?

At ALS, you can discover a fulfilling career that truly makes an impact in the community. We also offer our staff a range of generous benefits including:

  • Not-for-profit salary packaging to reduce your tax burden, which means you get to keep more of your hard-earned money in your pocket
  • Annual leave loading of 17.5%, ensuring that you are rewarded for your time off and can enjoy a well-deserved break.
  • Career and professional development opportunities

At ALS, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of safe recruitment practices. Therefore, it is essential that candidates either possess or have the capacity to obtain a current and valid Working with Children (NSW) or Working with Vulnerable People (ACT) check for this role.

We are focused to providing equal opportunities to all candidates. If you identify as a person with a disability and need any adjustments or support with your application including throughout the recruitment process, please let us know by reaching out to our Talent Team
