ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Director National Law Policy (NLP), the Senior Officer National Law Policy assists in the delivery of complex policy projects where the Marine Safety (Domestic Commercial Vessel) National Law requirements interact with state and territory jurisdictions.

The holder of this position will interpret and help develop relevant policy, regulation and legislation and will liaise with a range of stakeholders, including industry and Commonwealth and State/Territory agencies, on a wide range of maritime safety and environmental issues.

You will be responsible for:

  • Support the review, development and improvement of the National Law policy and regulatory framework
  • Engage on policy, legislation, operational and technical matters for safety and maritime environment protection
  • Build and maintain working relationships in AMSA, and with AMSA's stakeholders, including other Government entities
  • Contribute to high-quality regulatory discussion, advice, submissions, reports, papers and briefings
  • Prepare high-quality briefing materials and reports for domestic meetings, Government processes, the AMSA Board and AMSA's Senior Executive

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

To be successful in this position, you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent work experience, preferably in a policy or regulatory role.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others as part of a team and engage with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and deliver results to a high standard in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake research and analysis, synthesising complex information to develop options or advice.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare briefings on complex issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain attention to detail while progressing complex or high-volume work.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate inputs across teams or stakeholders to ensure timely and high-quality outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and/or administer policy, regulation, legislation and/or international conventions, preferably in relation to environmental protection or marine safety matters.
  • Project management qualifications and/or demonstrated experience in project management.
