About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Technical Officer to join our Operations team within the School of Science, Computing and Emerging Technologies to support research and teaching activities occurring at the interface of biology and engineering disciplines within the designated laboratories.

In this role, you will provide advice to staff and students on OH&S issues to ensure the safe and functional running of both undergraduate/postgraduate practical classes and research laboratories and general housekeeping of these spaces. You will work closely with other technical staff, academics and researchers on a day-to-day basis and operate with a strong focus on great customer service and team player skills, as you will be required to provide support for teaching related activities such as set up and pull down of practical classes as needed. 

We are seeking individuals with advanced laboratory skills in the biological sciences and bioengineering disciplines together with a hands-on approach to laboratory management and experience working with interdisciplinary teams. A willingness to be engaged in continuous learning and professional development to advance technical competence is key to the role.

This role also requires a strong onsite laboratory presence to ensure service, safety and OHS requirements are met.

About You

To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

  • Extensive experience in laboratory operations in a teaching or research organisation.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in the operation of a wide range of equipment and techniques in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Molecular Biology, specifically Protein expression, Biochemical assays, DNA techniques, Microscopy and Cell Biology techniques.
  • Experience with the operation of specialised equipment such as flow cytometer, confocal microscope, fluorescence and optical microscopes.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of requirements associated with chemical and biological hazards, genetically modified organisms and physical containment, including reporting requirements.
  • Proven experience in creating safety documentation such as Standard Operating Procedure, Safe Working Instructions and Risk Assessments for complex instrumentation and tasks.

Qualifications

  • An Undergraduate Science Degree in Biomedical Science, Bioengineering, or Biotechnology (with Honours is preferable) and subsequent relevant laboratory experience in supporting teaching and research.
