Primary objective
As a Senior Aboriginal Health Practitioner, coordinate and manage culturally safe and responsive specialist palliative health care
program including promoting holistic health and wellbeing, and local decision making in healthcare for individuals, families and
communities.
Context statement
The Aboriginal Health Practitioner classification level AHP4 [specialist] is a senior, experienced and proficient practitioner who is
coordinating and managing specialist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care program. Note holistic health care
services encompass the physical, mental, social and emotional, environmental and spiritual health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander families and communities. Note this position will be located within the Community palliative care unit in Alice
Springs hospital
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Influence and manage culturally safe and responsive palliative care healthcare programs and service, including decision-making
in health care services to achieve better health outcome across the community.
2. Contribute to the development and delivery of education and training for primary and secondary health providers.
3. Provide supervision and support to new graduates and trainees; including maintaining professional boundaries and
confidentiality during all supervision activities; and reinforcing reflective professional practice.
- Provide practice and cultural support to other health professionals to build cultural competence.
- Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
6. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Current registration with Ahpra as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner.
2. Minimum AQF level 6 as per NTPS Aboriginal Health Practitioner Enterprise Agreement and/or learning agreement.
3. Proven experience Community Palliative Care employed as a registered Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health
Practitioner in managing programs and solving problems across the community level.
4. Demonstrated experience providing support and wellbeing to Aboriginal health practitioners including providing feedback
and contributing to practice improvements.
5. Demonstrated local Aboriginal cultural knowledge and respect as a senior practitioner with the ability to identify and work with
local traditional health practices and effectively communicate and engage with the community to plan, organise and evaluate
primary health care programs.
