Primary objective

Provide high quality specialist care in Cardiology and Internal Medicine to patients at Alice Springs Hospital, Alice Springs and Barkly

regions, and fringe areas of Western Australia and South Australia.

Context statement

Alice Springs Hospital is a 183 bed teaching hospital affiliated with the Flinders University in South Australia and Charles Darwin University

in Darwin. It is the only major hospital covering over a million square km with a strong focus on Indigenous and remote health as a result

of such a dispersed population. Over two thirds of acute admissions are Aboriginal people both from town and remote communities.

Consequently, cultural, language and communication skills are an important component of our service delivery.

The Central Australian region has the highest prevalence of multiple Cardiovascular conditions in Australia, including acute coronary

syndromes, rheumatic heart disease and heart failure. The Cardiology department provides an inpatient service, multiple outpatient

services (including outreach services) and various diagnostic services including transthoracic and trans-oesophageal echocardiography,

stress echocardiography, CT-computed tomography, exercise stress testing and various ambulatory services including holter and blood

pressure monitoring, device monitoring etc. Patients requiring cardiac catheterisation, device procedures or cardio-thoracic surgery are

referred to Tertiary centres in South Australia.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide strong leadership and manage all aspects of the day-to-day activities of within Cardiology and the Department of Medicine,

focusing on patient safety and quality of services.

2. Provide high quality safe inpatient, outpatient and outreach clinical services in Internal Medicine.

3. Initiate and partake in quality management activities, performance appraisal, personal and Departmental continuing education

programs.

4. Ensure adequate supervision of and participation in teaching programs for junior medical staff, including advanced trainees and medical

students.

5. Undertake Clinical Audit activities and research as appropriate.

6. Participate in relevant Hospital Committees and other administrative duties as required from time-to-time and provide advice to the

Director of Medical and Clinical Services on matters relating to Internal Medical.

7. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in

order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

8. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Eligible for specialist medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA).

2. Appropriate specialist qualifications and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, or equivalent.

  1. Interest in Indigenous health and ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
  2. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work environment

as a team member and the ability to work effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team

5. Demonstrated commitment to high quality patient care.

6. Ability to assume administrative and supervisory responsibilities.

7. Demonstrated initiative and ability to motivate others and flexibility to operate in a changing environment.

8. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.

Desirable

1. Sub-Specialty training in Advanced Cardiac Imaging (including echo, CT-coronary angiography or Cardiac MRI) or Heart Failure.

2. Dual-Training in, experience working in or an interest in, General Internal Medicine.
