Primary objective
As a member of the multidisciplinary team ensure acute mental health care is provided in a culturally safe and effective
manner through assessment, care planning, and treatment of clients with acute mental illness while promoting health and
well-being.
Context statement
A practitioner at the level has acquired some experience and knowledge of various Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Mental Health/Social and Emotional Wellbeing practices and system. This position is based within the Central Australia
Mental Health Unit and requires the individual to have the capacity to work shift work and to work across clinical
teams/areas to meet clinical need as required.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provides a culturally responsive service in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, input into assessment and
care plans for Aboriginal clients and to assist with safe discharge planning.
2. Engage with community members to strengthen community involvement in health service delivery.
3. Provide cultural support to other health professionals to build cultural competence and responsiveness.
4. Provide clinical supervision, mentoring, and support to Trainee Aboriginal Health Practitioners to develop as competent
and safe practitioners.
5. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
6. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary practice and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Current registration with AHPRA as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner with no conditions.
Diploma of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice and/or equivalent
Demonstrated experience in providing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Care practice to individuals and
families, including maintaining and developing health service standards.
4. Demonstrated local cultural knowledge, respect and safety at the individual and families' levels.
- Understanding of relevant national and state-wide legislation and frameworks including the NT Mental Health and
Related Services Act, and the National Safety and Quality Health Standards relevant for Mental Health Services
6. Current Ochre Card, criminal history check, confirmation of Aboriginality and current Driver's License as required.
