Primary objective

Develops and uses expert nursing skills in the assessment, diagnosis and management of a person's health needs within relevant clinical

specialty area. Develops and provides senior leadership and reference point for best practice in matters of clinical importance across a

specialist client population.

Context statement

The Nurse Practitioner Diabetes candidate is responsible for providing and leading advanced and extended clinical care within Alice Springs

Hospital. Nurses classified at this level are nurse leaders and have a significant degree of autonomy and decision making within their scope

of clinical practice. The Nurse Practitioner Candidate will be employed on a fixed period contract whilst working towards NMBA

endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner (Nurse Practitioner Progression scheme). The nurse practitioner candidate will be clinically and

professionally supported to undertake a Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) approved program of study leading to

endorsement as a nurse practitioner, including periods of integrated professional practice.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provides direct clinical care in a defined practice area for client group with diverse and/or complex care requirements.

2. Provides sound professional advice critical in dealing with significant issues related to assessment, planning, review, evaluation and

coordination of client care in a defined practice area.

3. Undertakes activities to develop and demonstrate the standards for practice required for NMBA endorsement as a nurse practitioner.

  1. Demonstrate NTH values – safe; responsive; kind – in all decision-making and interactions with consumers and colleagues.
  2. Follows defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in

order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Current registration as a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

2. Enrolled in a NMBA approved program of study leading to endorsement as a nurse practitioner or demonstrated eligibility for

enrolment.

3. A postgraduate qualification at Australian Qualifications Framework Level 8 in a relevant clinical field.

  1. Demonstrated experience of advanced nursing practice: a minimum of two years full time equivalent (FTE) as a registered nurse in a

specified clinical field and two years FTE of current advanced nursing practice in this same clinical field

  1. Demonstrated advanced clinical knowledge, skills, and experience in relevant area of nursing/midwifery supporting well-developed

clinical decision-making and problem solving to achieve best practice outcomes for healthcare consumers.

6. Demonstrated experience in collaboratively supporting and participating in investigating and implementing recommendations for

improved health outcomes using a range of appropriate audit/research approaches.

7. Demonstrated use of effective communication skills to maximise productive working relationships, including with relevant specialists

and other senior staff, and manages conflict to promote co-operation, teamwork and understanding.

8. Demonstrates and applies well-developed knowledge and understanding of the social and cultural issues, influences and sensitivities

that influence health care provision for individuals and groups.

making and problem solving to achieve best practice outcomes for healthcare consumers.

5. Demonstrated proficiency in the understanding, application, analysis and interpretation of a professional body of knowledge to provide

sound advice and inform practice change to optimise healthcare outcomes.

6. Experience leading, supporting, and participating in quality assurance activities, clinical audits, clinical trials, and research to enhance

effectiveness of client care.

7. Demonstrated use of effective communication skills to maximise productive working relationships, and to persuade, influence and

convince other senior staff, clients and communities including on sensitive matters requiring tact and diplomacy.

8. Demonstrates and applies highly developed knowledge and understanding of the social and cultural issues, influences and sensitivities

that influence health care provision for individuals and groups
