Youturn Specialist Homelessness Service provides a range of short-term accommodation and housing assistance which is used to support singles, couples, and families over the age of 16, through their crisis housing situation as they move towards independent living. We aim to reduce the number of people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless by providing supported accommodations, assertive outreach, and centre-based support. You can find out more at 

The Opportunity

As a Case Officer, you will deliver high-quality, client-centred services to our diverse cliental. This position focuses on understanding and addressing the needs of people experiencing multiple and/or complex needs, who may have children, who are experiencing homelessness. You will be responsible for undertaking referrals and assessments, developing and reviewing support and case plans. The Case Officer will work collaboratively with service providers and internal / external stakeholders, to achieve the best possible outcomes for the clients.

You will play a critical role in engaging with individuals and families experiencing homelessness, many of whom may be resistant to services due to past trauma or systemic barriers. Using a trauma informed and client centred approach, you will build rapport, establish trust, and provide practical and emotional support to those in crisis.

Your role involves conducting assessments, offering crisis intervention, and connecting clients with appropriate housing, health, and social services. You will navigate complex situations, balancing urgent needs with long-term support planning while ensuring inclusivity and respect for diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

Working in this role requires emotional resilience, as you may be exposed to distressing situations and disclosures of trauma. You will also be responsible for making child protection notifications where necessary, even in challenging circumstances. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and the ability to prioritise competing demands are essential.

As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to a positive team culture, think creatively to solve problems, and support clients in making informed choices, even when their decisions differ from your own values. The role requires professionalism, empathy, and the ability to make difficult decisions that uphold service integrity and client safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial assessment of clients' needs and provide information and assistance in accessing appropriate services and resources.
  • Receive referrals, assess client needs, coordinate case management and regularly review case plans with the Program Coordinator / Team Leader.
  • Develop and implement individual case plans, conduct regular client support sessions, and support clients from homelessness to sustainable housing.
  • Manage and support service delivery with coordinated approach to internal and external referrals.
  • Ensure culturally competent practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
  • Carry out required documentation and recording, in accordance with Procedures.
  • Actively contribute to a positive and supportive work culture by fostering teamwork, open communication, and mutual respect.

Essential Requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications and/or relevant equivalent experience.
  • Experience in Social Housing and/or delivering crisis accommodation programs including an understanding of asset management procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of client centred case management and demonstrated ability in applying such principles
  • Understanding of issues facing people who are homeless and / or facing severe barriers to achieving stability and security.
  • Demonstrated understanding of community-based service delivery models and client case management practices.
  • An ability to interpret and understand Government legislation, policies and practices impacting service development and delivery, including knowledge of the child protection system.

Other Requirements

  • This role may include some evening and early morning work in order to meet client needs.
  • Successful applicants will also need to hold a 'C' class Open driver licence, State Working with Children Check and hold, or be eligible to apply for, a Licensed Care Suitability Check issued by the QLD Department of Child Safety, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs.
