About the role
Our client is looking for an experienced Infrastructure Engineer to join the Storage and Virtualisation (SV) team within a large multi-department IT partnership. The team manages core infrastructure services, including storage, virtualisation, and data protection. The role involves system administration, scripting, and automation across multiple technology stacks, with rostered on-call and after-hours responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain VMware vSphere ESXi, Aria Suite, and support the transition to VCF 9.
- Manage virtual desktop and backup environments.
- Maintain NAS and Fibre Channel SAN storage.
- Support cloud storage platforms including Azure Files, Azure Blob, and AWS S3.
- Handle service requests and incidents, coordinating with internal teams and vendors.
- Apply system updates, patches, and hardware maintenance.
- Develop and maintain automation and monitoring scripts.
- Maintain technical documentation and configuration records.
- Participate in team meetings, clarify requirements, and confirm service delivery.
- Perform after-hours or on-call duties as part of a shared roster.
Highly desirable criteria
- Experience or knowledge of the following technologies will be viewed favourably:
- VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), NSX, Aria Automation (cloud templates/workflows).
- Omnissa Horizon virtual desktop provisioning.
- HPE Synergy Blade Enclosures, Servers, and OneView.
- Brocade SAN switches, PureStorage FlashArray, Hitachi storage arrays.
- Dell Isilon NAS, Avamar, Networker, PowerProtect Data Manager, Data Domain.
- AWS and Azure storage technologies (S3, Blob, File Gateways, Azure Files).
- Terraform, GitHub, and Visual Studio.
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of SFIA level 4 capabilities in IT infrastructure, storage management, incident, and change management.
- Experience within enterprise or government environments.
- Strong automation and scripting mindset.
- Familiarity with backup, monitoring, and reporting systems.
Skills and experience
- Proven experience with VMware vSphere ESXi and vCentre (v7 or v8).
- Experience with Linux (preferably RedHat Enterprise with SELinux).
- Strong scripting ability in Linux or PowerShell.
- Experience managing blade or rack-mount server hardware.
- Solid understanding of backup, recovery, NAS, and Fibre Channel SAN principles.
- Strong analytical, communication, and documentation skills.
- Ability to prioritise and deliver outcomes independently.
- Collaborative and proactive in knowledge sharing.
