The Opportunity
Berry Street provides services to children, young people and their families across the South East Victoria region.
The Youth Justice Act 2024 will raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 12 years from 30 September 2025. This means that children aged 10- and 11-years will no longer be subject to statutory supervision by Youth Justice and will not be eligible for most programs delivered by or on behalf of Youth Justice.
To support these changes, the Victorian Budget allocated $5 million "for early intervention, diversion and family therapy programs for 10- and 11-year-old young people in contact, or at risk of contact, with the justice system".
This will be a voluntary service targeted to children and families with the most complex needs, where the child's behaviour and other factors place them at risk of future engagement with the justice system.
