The Student Support Branch is seeking applications for the newly established role of Head of Statewide Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services (Auslan)
The Head of Statewide Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services is a new role within the Statewide Services portfolio of the Department of Education. The successful applicant will provide oversight to a dynamic team of Teachers of the Deaf, Teacher Aides, and Specialist Support staff in the delivery of educational services and support to students and children who use Auslan as their first, or most accessible language. The role collaborates widely with school, regional and statewide staff to ensure the most effective coordination of services to students and reports to the Director, Statewide Services in cooperation with the Principal, Toowong State School.

About the Role
The Head of Statewide Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services (Auslan) is responsible for leading the planning, development, management, and delivery of Auslan services in schools, ensuring these services are aligned with the department's strategic objectives for children prior to Prep and for deaf and hard of hearing students. The role requires the clear definition of outcomes, deliverables, timelines, resource requirements, and performance measures to support effective service delivery. Strong professionalism and clear communication are essential, particularly in building and maintaining productive relationships with families, schools, and both regional and statewide staff to support consistent and high-quality outcomes.
Regionally based Principal Advisors (Auslan) will report to and be supported by the Head of Statewide Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services (Auslan) in developing and implementing a cohesive service that maximizes student outcomes.
Your Responsibilities
As the Head of Statewide Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services (Auslan), your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Engage, consult and collaborate with a high level of professionalism with internal and external stakeholders, with a focus on building productive partnering relationships to facilitate successful delivery of strategic and operational goals.
- Provide leadership and direction in the planning and implementation of State Schools Students and Support priorities, ensuring that the outcomes are aligned to, and supportive of, the department's agenda for improvement or inclusive education policy in schools.
- Provide expert advice and support to senior executive of the division and within the department on policy and strategy relating to Auslan by conceptualising requirements, identifying steps and initiating, communicating and collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Manage the human, financial, facilities and curriculum resources of the Auslan service, including the allocation of Auslan targeted resources and appropriations to achieve outcomes and prepare high level written reports, submissions and correspondence as required.
The successful applicant must be a qualified Teacher of the Deaf and possess an ability to partner with members of the Deaf Community is essential and much valued aspect of this role, including fluency in using Auslan as recognised through formal qualification.
