The Role

We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Criminal Lawyer and/or a Law Clerk to represent clients and support senior solicitors in criminal law matters. These roles are ideal for an early-career lawyer or law clerk just getting started, where the candidate will have a strong foundation in Queensland's criminal justice system, eager to grow in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment. You will handle a range of criminal cases, from summary offenses to serious felonies, while contributing to case strategy and client advocacy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Represent clients in court appearances, including bail applications, pleas, and hearings in Brisbane's Magistrates and District Courts.
  • Conduct thorough legal research using tools like Westlaw or LexisNexis to develop case strategies and arguments.
  • Draft and prepare legal documents, including briefs, affidavits, submissions, and correspondence.
  • Provide empathetic and professional advice to clients, guiding them through criminal proceedings with clarity and sensitivity.
  • Collaborate with senior lawyers to build robust defenses and manage case progression.
  • Maintain accurate case files and ensure compliance with Queensland court deadlines and procedures.
  • Uphold strict confidentiality and ethical standards in all client interactions and casework.
About You

The ideal candidate is an early-career lawyer with a passion for criminal law and a commitment to client advocacy in Queensland's legal landscape. You should have:

  • Qualifications: A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) from an Australian university.
  • Experience: Up to two years of post-admission experience in criminal law, including internships, clerkships, or roles with firms or Legal Aid Queensland. Exposure to court appearances or client representation is highly desirable.
  • Skills:

  • Strong legal research and analytical skills for case law, evidence analysis, and statutory interpretation under the Queensland Criminal Code.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication for court advocacy, client consultations, and drafting legal documents.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, legal research platforms, and practice management software.
  • Exceptional organisational skills with a focus on accuracy and meeting court deadlines.
