QLS has a full-time opportunity for a Senior Solicitor to join our Licensing team within the Regulation Division.
The Licensing team plays a key role in delivering QLS's regulatory responsibilities under the
Legal Profession Act 2007
. The team works to ensure the integrity of the profession and the protection of the public by assessing practitioner suitability and managing a range of complex legal matters.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to meaningful work within a collaborative and values-driven environment. You'll be involved in preparing submissions for Council and its delegates, providing legal advice, and engaging with external agencies. The work is varied and often sensitive, requiring thoughtful analysis, sound judgment, and a balanced approach.
In this role you will:
- Review and assess matters that may affect a practitioner's suitability to hold a practising certificate
- Prepare clear and well-reasoned submissions for Council and its delegates under the Legal Profession Act 2007
- Provide considered legal advice on administrative decision-making, statutory interpretation, and occupational regulation
- Engage with external agencies, including the Legal Services Commission and law enforcement bodies, as required
- Contribute to the development and implementation of regulatory policy
- Support trust account investigations and external interventions
- Stay informed on developments in jurisprudence relevant to solicitor regulation
As part of the regulatory function, you may be required to make recommendations that impact a solicitor's ability to practise. This aspect of the role calls for professionalism, discretion, and a commitment to fairness and ethical standards.
Ideally you will have the following:
- A bachelor's degree in law and approximately 5 years post-admission experience. If you have slightly less experience but feel confident in your ability to meet the key requirements of the role, we encourage you to apply.
- Experience in commercial law, litigation, or administrative law, with the ability to navigate complex legal matters.
- Strong judgment and the ability to provide clear, well-reasoned legal advice.
- Confidence in interpreting and applying legislation in a practical context.
- Well-developed communication, analytical and organisational skills.
- A current (or eligibility for) unrestricted practising certificate.
- Prior in-house experience and exposure to administrative litigation will be viewed favourably.
- An understanding of government structures and processes is also beneficial.
