Empirical Solutions is seeking an experienced Technical Writer (Engineering & Quality Systems) to support the development of technical standards, documentation, and assurance frameworks across major engineering programs.

This position plays a key role in ensuring quality, compliance, and engineering integrity across complex maritime and industrial systems. The role involves translating highly technical information into clear, structured documentation and supporting quality assurance and build assurance activities across multidisciplinary teams.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Technical Writer, you will:

• Develop, implement, and maintain technical standards, quality assurance procedures, and documentation frameworks
• Draft and publish technical plans, processes, and engineering documentation for review and approval
• Plan and support the conduct of audits, inspections, and quality surveillance activities
• Review engineering documentation, technical packages, and performance reports to ensure compliance and identify non-conformances
• Collaborate with engineers and subject matter experts to develop accurate and accessible content across multiple projects
• Manage documentation workflows and maintain version control within engineering management systems
• Prepare build assurance schedules, technical reports, and governance artefacts using standardised templates and tools
• Participate in technical meetings and quality workshops, providing documentation support and maintaining accurate records
• Analyse and recommend improvements to documentation and assurance practices to align with best practice standards
• Support the development and maintenance of engineering quality standards and continuous improvement initiatives

What We're Looking For

We welcome applications from professionals who bring:

• 10–15 years' experience in technical, engineering, or quality documentation roles within shipbuilding, oil & gas, or heavy engineering environments
• Demonstrated experience writing and publishing technical plans, processes, and assurance documentation
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, PDF editing, and document publishing tools
• Ability to interpret complex engineering information and tailor communication to diverse audiences
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong attention to detail
• Experience using documentation or workflow systems such as JIRA, TRMS, or equivalent
• Proven ability to engage with multidisciplinary stakeholders and manage competing priorities effectively

Qualifications & Certifications

• Minimum AQF Level 6 qualification (Advanced Diploma, Associate Degree, or equivalent) in Engineering, Quality Management, or a related discipline
• Understanding of ISO 9001 quality management principles and standards
• Experience with AutoCAD or similar design/documentation software (desirable)
• Security clearance (NV1 or equivalent)
