About the role

National Parks and Wildlife Service has a unique opportunity for a Senior Project Officer Feral Cat Control & Research to work as part of the team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage.

The Senior Project Officer, Cat Control & Research plays a pivotal role in managing and coordinating complex, high-impact projects that support NPWS strategic objectives. This position leads the delivery of targeted feral cat control programs, representing NPWS on the National Feral Cat Taskforce and overseeing a multidisciplinary team including operational staff, researchers, and contractors. You will drive project planning and evaluation, supervise and support staff and ensure programs are delivered on time, within budget and to the highest standards. Key responsibilities include coordinating ground shooting operations, leading research into innovative control methods such as aerial baiting, securing permits and approvals, engaging with stakeholders and communities, chairing the Project Control Group and ensuring rigorous data management and reporting systems are in place. This is a unique opportunity to combine project leadership, research coordination, and on-ground conservation delivery to make a tangible difference to biodiversity outcomes in NSW.

About You

You're a science-minded professional with a strong mix of research and on-ground operational experience, ready to lead bold, practical solutions for feral cat control. Comfortable at the helm of large collaborative teams, you know how to bring diverse expertise together and keep complex projects moving forward.

Confident, organised and hands-on, you thrive working with autonomy and making daily decisions that keep projects on time, on budget and delivering results. You're a natural leader who can balance strategy with action by planning, problem-solving, engaging stakeholders and inspiring your team to achieve meaningful conservation outcomes.

Essential requirements

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications or demonstrated equivalent, relevant professional experience.
  • Project management skills and experience with an understanding of contemporary best practice in procurement, tendering and contract preparation, in managing project teams, consultants and contractors, and in applying environmental safety and risk management policies and systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and reviewing strategic plans, policies and programs, and in providing strategic and operational advice and recommendations to senior management.
