The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.
The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.
**Overview of the Branch and Section**:
The Intelligence, Identity and Biometrics Systems (IIBS) Branch works collaboratively with business areas to support Intelligence, Identity and Biometrics capabilities. IIBS Branch is responsible for the delivery of critical ICT systems capability to business areas undergoing significant growth and change.
IIBS Branch is responsible for:
- Managing the technical delivery of the Intelligence, Identity and Biometrics Program of work
- Providing enterprise level data and business reporting services on behalf of the Department
- Providing ongoing maintenance and support for Intelligence, Identity and Biometrics Systems.
The Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) Section helps to enable the Department of Home Affairs’ vision of a secure Australia that is prosperous, open and united. Through the Connected Information Environment (CIE), the Data Warehouse Section delivers and runs products and services which are integrated, timely and accurate. These products and services are used across the Portfolio and by our partners to identify threats, manage risk and deliver services and operations.
**About the role**:
The Data Analyst works under limited direction and contributes to data analysis, data modelling, data extraction and data exploitation capabilities being developed by the Data Warehouse Section. The occupant is responsible for contributing towards collaboration between various teams involved in the delivery of these capabilities. The occupant will need to plan, schedule and monitor work to meet time and quality targets. The occupant will need to develop and maintain knowledge of relevant software development technologies and delivery methodologies. The position strives for continuous improvement in processes and methodologies to increase productivity and templates and other artefacts. There is no shift-work required for this role although occasional after hours work may be required to support ICT releases.
**Specific duties/responsibilities**:
- Performing data interrogation, validation, dash boarding and modelling using efficient and effective SQL
- Discovering trends, patterns and stories told by the data, structured and unstructured, and presenting them to stakeholders
- Leveraging new open data sources and extracting further value from existing data
- Analysing and interpreting results using standard statistical tools and techniques
- Translate logical data models into physical designs, and assist in the authoring of any detailed design documentation.
**Role requirements/qualifications**:
- Mandatory_
- Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mathematics, Statistics or a related discipline.
- A minimum 3 years’ experience working as a Data Analyst.
- Desirable - Knowledge and experience of several of the following:_
- Ability to design, code, test, correct and document complex SQL and scripts from agreed specifications, and subsequent iterations, using agreed standards and tools, to achieve a well-engineered result
- Ability to assist with the development of implementation plans for complex requests for change and to evaluate risks to the integrity of service environment inherent in proposed implementations (including availability, performance, security and compliance of the business services impacted)
- Ability to contribute to the assessment, analysis, development, documentation and implementation of changes based on requests for change
- Proven ability to maintain, manipulate and interrogate large data sets using a range of statistical analytic software including SAS and/ or other software (e.g., SPSS, R, Python, and Microsoft Excel)
