**About Research, Innovation and Commercialisation**
Research, Innovation and Commercialisation (RIC) is the central facilitator of research funding in the University, taking advantage of the full diversity of research funding opportunities.
The **Office of Research Ethics and Integrity (OREI)** provides expert advice, guidance and training to facilitate the ethical and responsible conduct of research. We partner with Chancellery and Academic Divisions to support multiple key areas of governance and oversight including: research integrity, human and animal research ethics, gene technology, biosecurity and biosafety, animal welfare, export controls, autonomous sanctions, quality assurance and clinical trials
**About the Role**
As the Animal Ethics Manager, you will be responsible for the strategic development and operational management of the Animal Ethics shared service. You will facilitate the ethical conduct of teaching and research activities, ensuring compliance with the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes and the related legislation and guidelines.
Through collaborating with colleagues in the Animal Welfare team and across the Academic faculties, you will play a critical role in building and implementing a Culture of Care across the University. Creating a cohesive and streamlined service with Human Ethics will enable a wide remit of exciting, ground-breaking scientific research to run smoothly, ensuring research is aligned to the external regulatory requirements and the overall mission of the University.
Responsibilities include:
- Lead and manage the Animal Ethics team through developing, coaching and mentoring your four direct reports and promoting a culture of service excellence and continuous improvement
- Initiate, develop and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with all stakeholders including regulatory authorities, Animal Ethics Committees and Chairs, Academic Divisions and researchers
- Provide strategic advice and make recommendations to senior management, Licence Nominees and Animal Ethics Committees on complex issues related to animal ethics, committee processes, compliance, risks and opportunities
**About You**
To be successful in this role, you will take ownership in leading and supporting your team to achieve the operational objectives of the Animal Ethics shared service. You will be passionate and driven by contributing to high impact research initiatives and facilitating the ethical conduct and welfare of animals as part of this research.
Your advanced communication and relationship management skills will enable you to engage, influence and negotiate with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders across all levels.
You will also have:
- A recognised and relevant postgraduate qualification and extensive experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training in a research or highly regulated environment
- Demonstrated skills in policy analysis and interpretation with mature judgement in dealing with complex, often sensitive issues potentially impacting on individual researchers
- Significant knowledge or demonstrated capacity to learn the principles and conduct of ethical research, external regulatory frameworks (i.e., Victorian Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 (POCTA Act), Australian Code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes 8th edition 2013) and the University’s animal ethics framework and policies
