**About the Role**
Reporting to the Associate Director Research Ethics, the Manager Regulatory Compliance (Animal Care and Use) is responsible for establishing and implementing a program of audit and monitoring of University wide compliance with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (POCTA) Act 1986, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulations 2019, the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (The Code) and the Code of Practice for the Housing and Care of Laboratory Mice, Rats, Guinea Pigs and Rabbits.

Operating in a highly regulated environment, the University of Melbourne has a broad and diverse program of animal care and use, underpinned by a complex ecosystem with individual and collective compliance responsibilities. This role will lead a small team to monitor, audit and report on regulatory compliance across the University’s animal care and use program, including Licence Nominee responsibilities, animal facility operations, animal ethics compliance and the institution’s program of veterinary care.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Develop and implement an ongoing program of auditing, monitoring and reporting on operational compliance with the relevant legislation, regulations and codes of practice, across the University’s ecosystem for animal care and use.
- Identify issues or risks, undertake analysis, develop options and provide expert advice to senior management on complex matters related to regulatory compliance in animal care and use.
- Working closely with the Manager Animal Ethics and the Manager Animal Care and Use Advisory Service, develop the understanding of the University’s community of animal carers and investigators, animal ethics committees and Licence Nominees on their obligations under POCTA and the Code.

**Who we are looking for**
This role will suit someone with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to devise practical solutions to complex issues. You will have many relationship partnering responsibilities, so you will need to have the gravitas and confidence to convey complex information efficiently to a wide range of audiences in an engaging and effective manner.

You will also have:

- A recognised and relevant postgraduate qualification and extensive experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/ training in a University or research environment.
- Accreditation for auditing certified ISO systems or demonstrated experience in auditing/monitoring approved activities and facilities against defined criteria or Australian standards.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Australian law relating to research activity involving the care and use of animals including housing facilities.
- Demonstrated experience in delivering strategic projects, including the development and review of policies, guidelines, procedures, and processes.
- Ideally you will have experience in people management or mentoring junior staff.
