**Eligibility**
- To be eligible for employment with the Department of Health and Aged Care

**Division Responsibilities**

The Benefits Integrity and Digital Health Division (BIDHD) is responsible for maintaining the

affordability of medical services in Australia by protecting the integrity of Medicare

payments through supporting healthcare providers with delivery of education and

information on appropriate use of Medicare; with digitally enabled programs to support

clinical care and Health payments; designing consumer/patient centred digitally enabled

programs across Health and with key government partners; leading Health’s relationship

with Services Australia to improve the delivery of Health and Aged Care policy, program and

compliance objectives of Government.

**Branch Responsibilities**

The Provider Support and Systems Branch contributes to the department’s aims of

protecting the integrity of the Medicare system and ensuring communities have reasonable

access to PBS medicines by supporting Medicare service providers by providing advice on

the interpretation of MBS items; undertaking decision reviews, oversighting BIDHD’s quality

management; developing and maintaining the Division’s compliance business model

systems; engaging debtors in debt repayment options; regulating approved suppliers of PBS

medicines and supporting the Australian Community Pharmacy Authority.

The Compliance Enforcement and Professional Review Branch protects the integrity of

Medicare, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, and the Child Dental Benefits Scheme

through compliance activities including fraud investigations, practitioner reviews, and

compliance in relation to approved pathology collection centres and pharmacies.

Professional Review Section administers the Practitioner Review Program (PRP), under

which health professionals review and interact with health practitioners (GPs, Specialists,

and Allied health providers) regarding their Medicare servicing and Pharmaceutical Benefits

Scheme (PBS) prescribing. Where appropriate, practitioners or corporate entities that may

have engaged in possible inappropriate practice are referred to the Director of Professional

Services Review for further review.

**Section Responsibilities**

The AskMBS section is responsible for providing authoritative and comprehensive responses

to a large number and range of enquiries from providers of MBS services, practice

of MBS items, explanatory notes, and associated legislation. The section works closely with

the Department’s internal policy and compliance areas and external stakeholders as

required.

The Professional Review Section seeks to protect the integrity of Medicare and the PBS

through the administration of the PRP. The aim of the PRP is to improve compliance in

practitioner rendering and initiating of services under Medicare and prescribing under the

PBS. This includes reviewing health practitioners’ Medicare servicing and PBS prescribing,

identifying areas of potential concern and interacting with practitioners to discuss these

concerns. Where concerns cannot be resolved under the PRP, a request may be made to the

Director, Professional Services Review, to review a practitioner’s billing.

The roles provide flexible arrangements and generous conditions, including the ability to

undertake sessions in clinical practice, to work some days from home, four weeks annual

leave, Professional Development Allowance, and 15.4 per cent superannuation. Successful

applicants will become part of a large and supportive team.
