**Laboratory Manager**
REC Equine Specialists is an equine practice servicing a wide range of horses and ponies from miniature to elite race and sport horses. Although we have a proud history of extensive experience servicing the Thoroughbred Racing industry, a wide array of breeds and conditions are treated daily providing the best possible surgical and medical care for the horses in NSW and beyond.
Our practice of registered equine specialist’s service the fields of surgery, medicine, and anesthesia. Our hospital caseload encompasses a combination of referral and primary accessions, and our ambulatory stud medicine and reproduction rotations are carried out at Illawarra Equine Centre and Southern Highlands Equine Centre.
**Duties will include**:
The main aspects of this role include (but are not limited to):
- Overall management of the daily operations of the laboratory
- Overseeing the sampling, testing and reporting in accordance with the specifications, using appropriate test methods
- Maintain the optimum efficiency in laboratory operations by maximising throughput of pathology services including biochemistry, hematology and clinical bacteriology
- Planning for busy periods
- Liaison with internal staff on testing schedules, methods, procedures and results;
- Liaise with trainers and other clients
Assist in providing the following pathology services:
- Oversee specimen reception for an equine hospital.
- Haematology, Biochemistry, Urinalysis, Fluid Analysis, Bacteriology, cytological evaluation
- Run specimens on Beckman 500 AU. Perform maintenance procedures on instrument, monitor calibrations and Quality Controls.
- Run specimens on Mindray Haematology analyser and perform maintenance. Monitor calibrations and Quality Controls
- Perform fluid analysis, haematology slide evaluation and various cytological specimens such as corneal scrapings.
- Perform urinalysis
- Create reports and validate results on Lab software\
- Perform culture and sensitivity on various samples such as faecal samples.
- Salmonella isolation
- Monitor and order reagents and consumables
- Enter hospital billing for Pathology specimens
- Perform monthly reports
- Train and supervise students and interns in afterhours lab procedures.
- Maintain various equipment such as centrifuges, microscopes etc and order external maintenance and repairs on such equipment
- Maintain and operate Cobas Integra supplementary analyser. Monitor calibrations and Quality Controls
- Liaise with hospital clinicians and issue lab reports.
- Liaise with track veterinarians and issue lab reports.

**Essential Criteria**
A relevant degree or higher qualification or equivalent international qualification
- A minimum of at least 18 months’ professional equine pathology experience is required
Applicants must be enthusiastic, motivated, and keen to make the most of the position in our busy high-profile equine practice.
The salary range will be between $71,000 and $86,000 and will be commensurate with your skills and years of experience.
Pay: $71,000.00 - $86,000.00 per year
