The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.
The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. **COVID-19 Vaccination requirement**:
All Border Force Officer Recruits will be required to interact with international travellers and crew. As a condition of employment, recruits will need to be ‘up to date’ with their COVID-19 vaccinations; receive two doses of the COVID-19 vaccination and booster dose before they begin their 12 month training. Prior to your Letter of Offer being sent, proof of vaccination status will be required.
**Overview of the Australian Border Force**:
The Australian Border Force (ABF) is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and customs service, sitting within the Home Affairs portfolio. The ABF’s mission is to protect Australia’s border and enable legitimate travel and trade.
**Overview of the Border Force Officer Recruit Training (BFORT) Program**:
Border Force Officer (BFO) Recruits undertake an intensive twelve-month training program, consisting of a mix between classroom-based and on-the-job training. This is a nationally run program with recruits being offered a placement in a particular State or Territory.
Upon successful completion of the BFORT program BFOs will graduate as an Australian Public Service Level 3 (APS3) Border Force Officer.

- An Australian citizen
- Have completed a Year 12 education, or Year 10 with a trade certificate or a Cert IV and/or equivalent or have relevant work experience
- Able to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) clearance and Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC)
- Able to obtain and maintain relevant medical, fitness and psychometric requirements
- Able to complete Operational Safety Training and be willing to carry and use personal defence equipment, including a firearm (as required).
**About the role**:
As a BFO, you will manage the security and integrity of Australia’s borders. You will work closely with other government and international agencies to detect and deter the unlawful movement of goods and people across the border. You will contribute to the economic recovery of our country through the reopening of Australia’s borders, while ensuring our community is safe and secure.
As a Border Force Officer you will provide frontline support for roles including:
- Processing passengers and/or clearing cargo at an air or seaport
- Clearing mail at a clearance centre
- Patrolling the Australian coastline in an ABF vessel
- Working at in a regional district office
- Investigating illegal border activity
- Working at a detention centre
- Locating and detaining unlawful non-citizens.
The ABF operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. BFOs may be required to undertake shift work as part of their role. Busy periods tend to align with peak travel periods, including school holidays and Australian events. Opportunities for officers to take leave during peak periods may be limited.
