The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.
The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.
**Overview of the Branch and Section**:
The Australian Border Force (ABF) is an operationally independent body under the Home Affairs Portfolio. The ABF is responsible for operational activity that supports the Australian Government’s border protection, investigations, compliance, detention and enforcement functions.
Within the ABF, Air and Marine Capability Branch (AMCB) is responsible for the capability management of a fleet of air and marine surveillance, patrol and response assets. Our capabilities include ocean going patrol boats, shallow water and coastal response vessels and contracted aircrafts. AMCB operates in a complex, challenging and changing environment that is characterised by a continual high tempo of operations.
The Fleet Manager is part of either the Capital Vessel In-Service Support Section or the In-Service Support Cape Class Section in the Air and Marine Capability Branch. The Sections provide In-Service Support arrangements for the ABF fleet which is delivered through sustainment contracts.
**About the role**:
As a Fleet Manager based in Canberra you will assume responsibility for the technical management of eight Cape Class Patrol Boats or four larger hull and 30+ small hull vessels.
**Specific duties/responsibilities**:
- Lead a small team
- Plan vessel maintenance
- Review upstream planning for all Depot Level maintenance to ensure Fleet availability
- Ensure safety remains the highest priority, monitor ISM, Code audits and ensure corrective actions
- Ensure vessel certification, documentation and surveys are completed on time
- Review spare parts procurement and usage upkeep cycles against planned needs
- Monitor corrective maintenance; vessel technical performance, repairs and costs
- Out of hours work is a requirement for this role.
**Role requirements/qualifications**:
- Experience in managing complex in service support contracts in the public and/or corporate sector
- Demonstrated experience in managing a small team
- Possess strong stakeholder liaison, relationship management skills and experience in budget management
- Demonstrated ability to write complex briefing material in tight timeframes
- Possess or able to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance
- Experience in a ship manager position, or equivalent, and/or in maritime in service support management is highly desirable, but not essential.
