**Employment Opportunity**

This Assistant Secretary position is responsible for extradition (including managing our in-house litigation team), mutual assistance, international transfer of prisoners, and international crime treaties and policy.

The key aspects of the role include leading stakeholder engagement and relationships, actively leading on key sensitive or complex issues/cases and strategic oversight of:

- extradition, mutual assistance and international transfer of prisoner cases,
- extradition proceedings before Australian courts where the department is solicitor on the record, and
- extradition, mutual assistance and international transfer of prisoners and various other international crime cooperation policy, law reform, and treaty development and implementation

The Assistant Secretary:

- is a key adviser on matters within the responsibilities of the Branch with demonstrated ability to be decisive and progress complex matters under compressed timeframes and independently where required
- is accountable for demonstrating leadership across the branch and developing and maintaining a positive and productive work culture
- contributes significantly to the development of strategies and the delivery of programs to meet government objectives
- engages with a range of stakeholders to support efforts to combat cybercrime and support law enforcement, including Commonwealth, state and territory departments and agencies, international partners, the communications industry, civil society and public, and
- drives a workplace culture that is committed to innovation, influence and one AGD

**Qualifications**

Applicants must hold a degree in law from an Australian tertiary institution or comparable overseas qualification, which, in the opinion of the Secretary, is appropriate to the duties of the office, or admission in Australia as a legal practitioner.
