**Who we are**
The Exports and Veterinary Services Division provides export inspection and certification services and develops strategies to gain, improve or maintain market access for a wide range of food, inedible products of animal origin, live animal and reproductive materials. It provides residue monitoring services to Australian primary industries and administers 40 tariff rate quotas for products to the European Union, United States of America, Indonesia and Japan. The division also includes the Codex contact point which coordinates technical input from both industry and government to develop Australia’s position on international food standards.

The Veterinary and Export Meat Branch (VEMB) undertakes regulatory functions by providing inspection and certification for the export of meat, meat products and the import and export of live animals and reproductive material in order to meet importing country requirements and Australian legislative requirements.

The Live Animal section provides veterinary and technical assessments, inspections and certification for live animals and animal genetic material. These regulatory functions verify compliance with Australia’s biosecurity requirements for the import of live animals and animal genetic material and ensure compliance with importing country requirements and Australia’s export legislation for the export of live animals and animal genetic material. The major areas of work include regulation through veterinary inspections and assessment of health certificates for imported dogs, cats, live birds, horses, animal genetic material, fertile eggs, laboratory and zoo animals and the management of transits/trans shipments. The inspection and assessment for issuance of certification for export, of animal genetic material, laboratory, zoo animals and certification for prescribed goods exports. Officers within the Live Animal section complete activities at regional offices, airports, seaports and third party premises around Australia. They assert their powers as Authorised Officers under the Export Control Act and as Biosecurity Officers under the Biosecurity Act.

**The Job**
The role of a Live Animal Team Leader is to lead and manage a team to achieve operational outcomes in line with the department's business plan. The successful applicant will need to influence change, while contributing to corporate planning and decision making processes. They will also be required to demonstrate innovative leadership while providing support to and managing staff in a regulatory environment. Please note due to the nature of the work in the Live Animal section, you will be required to undertake operational duties that may include indoor office based and outdoor work outside of usual business hours.

As a Live animal Team Leader, you will:

- lead, manage and support staff in a regulatory operational environment
- perform import and export duties across Australia, in strict compliance with export and biosecurity legislation, national standard operating procedures and work instructions
- use electronic databases and demonstrate computer literacy in maintaining accurate computer based and manual records
- provide supervision and training of staff to conduct live animal and genetic material import and export inspection and certification activities
- effectively communicate, liaise, negotiate with, and respond to internal and external stakeholders
- facilitate and support a positive team environment
- work collaboratively and effectively as part of the Live Animal team

The duties and responsibilities of the Live animal team leader role can be varied and include:

- leading and managing day to day operations of a team working in a regulatory environment, including managing workload and verification activities
- maintaining a detailed knowledge of the work instructions for the clearance of live animals and reproductive material
- train and manage the APS4 biosecurity officers in the live animal team towards the achievement of VEMB goals and objectives with mínimal supervision
- promoting and modelling the highest standards of integrity and ensuring adherence to APS Values, Employment Principles and Code of Conduct while managing diversity
- promoting and ensuring compliance with departmental Work Health and Safety (WHS) and rehabilitation policies and guidelines; and being actively alert for and report risks to WHS
