**The Role**
The Science Strategic Planning & Engagement Division (SSP&E) is responsible for the planning and oversight of DSTG’s research programs, including developing the strategic direction, capability planning and external engagement. Partnerships Branch, a branch of SSP&E, works to enhance DSTG impact by collaborating with research and industry partners, nationally and globally.
The Science Translation and Commercialisation (ST&C) directorate within Partnerships branch provides DSTG with best practice intellectual property (IP) management and both strategic and practical technology translation and business commercialisation proficiency to fast-track development of capability for the Australian Defence Forces, with additional spill-over benefits of assisting Australian industry and the Australian economy. An exciting opportunity for an Assistant Director, Science Translation and Commercialisation has become available to join the ST&C team. As part of the team, you will possess:
- Commercial acumen and demonstrated experience in successfully developing, implementing and sustaining productive industry partnerships in the research or industry environment.
- Experience in commercialisation or technology transfer and negotiating to completion a wide range of collaboration, commercialisation and research contracts.
- Experience or demonstrated ability to communicate, liaise and negotiate effectively and sensitively with all staff and industry and universities to build productive relationships and facilitate mutually-beneficial outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience in the process of protecting, developing and commercialising early-stage IP;
- An understanding of the complexities and processes related to the commercialisation of IP in a research or industry environment including having knowledge of best practices in translating technology to an outcome.
The position will contribute a commercialisation expert’s perspective to all aspects of commercialisation across the DSTG IP portfolio. The position will work closely with IP disclosures from DSTG researchers having commercial potential and with other ST&C team members to protect, market and commercially-exploit IP for the betterment of Defence capability and / or for the benefit of the sovereign Defence innovation economy.

We are looking for someone who is resilient, organised with excellent attention to detail, is an effective communicator encompassing strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills who can build productive relationships with colleagues and clients on all levels and works effectively as part of a team, as well as being able to undertake and prioritise individual tasks when required.
Demonstrable skills over a broad range of commercialisation activities and a practical knowledge of contracting and financial management as relates to commercialisation of technology would all be highly desirable. A solid understanding of the creation and strategic management of Intellectual Property (IP) is also required as is a desire to be part of a dynamic, innovative, fast-acting commercialisation team. Along with a positive can-do attitude, demonstrated experience in one or more of the following including innovative commercialisation methods and pathways, start-ups, spin-outs, scale-ups, SMEs, product development, venture capital and other non-traditional finance methods would be highly regarded.
