**The Opportunity**
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is seeking motivated and talented lawyers and legal policy professionals to contribute to the development and implementation of DFAT’s foreign, trade and development policy and its global corporate management functions. There are several vacancies in the Corporate Law Branch (DLB) and the International and AUKUS Law Branch (ILB).
We are seeking skilled professionals with diverse experience across legal practice (international and domestic law), who will provide strategic legal and legal policy advice and implementation.
The **Corporate Law Branch (DLB)** delivers legal enabling services that advance the department’s global operations and strategic objectives. In this internationally facing role, you may provide diplomatic, employment and WHS law advice in relation to the department’s complex overseas activities and network. You will support DFAT’s consular operations and may make delegated passports decisions.
Our work provides a unique opportunity to engage in the design and delivery of complex and innovative aid projects and to advise on high value commercial law, property and procurement issues.
The **International & AUKUS Law Branch (ILB)** provides international legal advice to the Government, the department and other agencies that advances Australia’s strategic and foreign policy objectives. This includes issues relating to the use of force, law of armed conflict, international criminal law, international human rights law, international refugee law, international environmental law, international nuclear law, and a range of security-related international law issues, including deployments, arms control and non-proliferation, cyber and space law.
As an Assistant Director in the Legal Division, you will have relevant experience (whether in public or private practice, international or corporate law), in providing legal advice, drafting legal documents, providing legal solutions for clients and/or managing litigation or other dispute resolution processes.
In this role you will exercise a significant degree of independence and be committed to leading a team to achieve outcomes and support senior leadership. You are committed to building strong interpersonal relationships to influence, negotiate and deliver while undertaking work that is complex and sensitive.
You will thrive in working in a diplomatic sphere, addressing domestic or international challenges. As a key member of the Legal Division, you will possess technical depth and work with experts in providing crucial legal guidance as you develop, support, analyse and explain critical emerging issues. This role will see you lead strategic government initiatives, collaborate, and deliver on critical initiatives in a global context.
