**The Opportunity**
The Freedom of Information and Privacy Law Section (FPL) is seeking high-performing Assistant Directors to join our team. This strategic role will enable you to work closely with senior leaders to drive outcomes that support the department’s management of legal compliance and sensitive information disclosure risks.
The team’s work is varied, fast-paced and critical to the department’s operations. You would be viewed as a trusted and reliable adviser by internal clients and would work independently.
We are looking for officers with diverse relevant experience across FOI and information disclosure practices. Legal qualifications are desirable but not required.
In this role, you will lead key aspects of the section’s work on complex information law. You will exercise sound judgement and critical thinking to draft legal or policy advice, administrative decisions, and submissions to the Information Commissioner.
You will have the opportunity to mentor and supervise staff, drive new FOI compliance improvement initiatives, and provide strategic advice across the department’s foreign policy, consular, passport, corporate operations, and aid program. You may also support broader branch priorities on other legal issues central to the operations of the department.
This role will build on your high-level specialist advice, in supporting the Senior Executive deliver on the strategic vision of the department.
You will have experience in:
- managing FOI and information disclosure risks;
- exercising sound professional judgement and a strategic thinking to solve problems;
- excellent analytical and communication skills;
- demonstrated success in building and maintaining professional relationships, including with clients and external stakeholders;
- the ability to work independently and prioritise within tight deadlines; and
- the ability to work collaboratively and as an effective member of a team.
