Adelaide Region SA, Australia Department of Industry, Science, Energy & Resources Full time

**Job no**: 513583

**Employment type**: Ongoing

**Location**: Adelaide

**Categories**: SES Band 1

**A**bout ARWA**:
The Australian Radioactive Waste Agency (ARWA) is leading the responsible management and safe storage and disposal of Australia’s radioactive waste. A key element of ARWA’s program is the delivery of the National Radioactive Waste Management Facility which will provide a purpose-built, highly engineered solution to manage radioactive waste from sources such as nuclear medicine production.

At ARWA, our dynamic, multidisciplinary team has a unique opportunity to drive the future of Australia’s expertise in safe and secure radioactive waste management, to protect people and the environment for generations to come. Our people come from diverse backgrounds, nationalities, and cultures. These differences bring challenges and opportunities, and they will ultimately enhance the delivery of our complex technical work. Our people have the experience and skills to put ARWA at the forefront of the global nuclear waste management field as we deliver a world class facility for Australia.

**Nuclear Literacy**

Radioactive waste exists in many locations around the country, including hospitals, research facilities and universities. While these locations maintain safety measures, they were not specifically designed for long-term waste management, making their continued use unsustainable. The construction and operation of a dedicated facility is needed to safeguard the future of Australia's nuclear medicine industry and nuclear research capabilities. ARWA’s culture of safety and security is international best practice and is complemented by our work to increase nuclear literacy in Australia through education and awareness.

**One ARWA Culture**:
The ARWA behaviours and principles provide a high-level framework that guides our decisions and actions. At ARWA, we are building a culture, where we embrace the complexity of our endeavour and work collaboratively together to develop and deliver our program.

**Our Principles**:

- **Big Picture**: We work with the end in mind. We respond flexibly to challenges, embrace learning, and continue to improve with a growth mindset.
- **Teamwork**: We will empower and support each other as our agency continues to evolve. We challenge constructively, with integrity and work together to deliver.
- **Empathy**: We welcome our diverse experiences, skills, cultures, and perspectives.
- **Transparency**: We believe in transparency. We strive to be open and honest; we are responsible for our actions and follow the APS Code of Conduct.

**Our Behaviours**:

- As we deliver, we embrace different ways of working and support each other to achieve our strategic goals.
- We are empowered to challenge, engage with transparency and acknowledge sensitivities.
- We demonstrate empathy and kindness when understanding the perspective of others.
- We support and trust each other to achieve the best outcomes.
- We empower each other to work collaboratively and deliver the best results.

**APS Values**

In addition, the APS Values underpin principles of good public administration and articulate performance expectations and standards of behaviour.

The APS Values require that we are:

- **Impartial**: The APS is apolitical and provides the government with advice that is frank, honest, timely and based on the best available evidence.
- **Committed to Service**: The APS is professional, objective, innovative and efficient, and works collaboratively to achieve the best results for the Australian community and the government.
- **Accountable**: The APS is open and accountable to the Australian community under the law and within the framework of Ministerial responsibility.
- **Respectful**: The APS respects all people, including their rights and their heritage.
- **Ethical**: The APS demonstrates leadership, is trustworthy, and acts with integrity, in all that it does.

**Position Overview**

**Key Responsibilities**:
In this role, you will:

- Be responsible for managing and delivering the licencing and technical programs that are essential to delivering ARWA’s ability to provide safe and sustainable radioactive waste management
- Identify future operational requirements for any NRWMF, including establishing design and development policy and procedures, operational flow models, safety cases (demonstrating the adequacy of safety management and control measures) and establishing required security arrangements
- Manage the specification of technical requirements and technical work programs for any NRWMF and ensure that appropriate design authority is in place to provide assurance that proposed solutions are fit for purpose
- Ensure that ARWA demonstrates its ongoing capacity and capability to manage Australia’s radioactive waste safely and securely to the satisfaction of environmental, radiological, nuclear and security regulators; provide technical oversight and ensure intelligent custom
