**About the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations**
We are committed to empowering futures, ensuring rights and enriching lives. We support people to have safe, secure and well-paid work with the skills for a sustainable future as we ourselves strive to be a model employer.
We provide the framework for fair and productive relationships between employers and employees. We also oversee skills development and training initiatives to support those entering the workforce or re-training to take advantage of emerging employment opportunities.
With us, your work directly contributes to shaping the employment landscape. Whether you are engaging in policy development, program implementation, or direct support services, your efforts will have a tangible impact on job seekers, employees and the economy by giving them a framework to build a future anchored and realised through employment.
It is our ambition to do things differently, to create the ‘department of great jobs’- where our people reflect our purpose.
**The Role**
The Property Operations Team in the IT Workplace, Environment and Customer Support Branch, Technology and Services Division, undertakes a range of property management services for the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations and the Department of Education. We are a friendly, committed team that works hard, and acknowledges our success.
The team works on the basis that we support DEWR and Education staff to have a better day at work from any of our locations, which in turn supports the outcomes of both departments.
We are part of the Corporate and Enabling Group at DEWR, and work with the following pillars:
- We do the basics brilliantly.
- We provide expert advice and support.
- We engage effectively with each other and our stakeholders.
- We consider the bigger picture, connect the dots and focus on priorities.
The Assistant Director, Accommodation models effective collaboration with a team of high-performing property and facilities officers, encouraging good communication, a ‘how can we help’ approach, and a commitment to engaging with stakeholders to provide professional property and facilities solutions on a variety of issues. It is a key role in the efficient and effective management of DEWR’s large, geographically dispersed property portfolio and includes but is not limited to:
- Managing a small team, including being able to surge to different priorities across the Property Operations team as required
- Managing the strategic accommodation planning process, including planning and then clearly and succinctly conveying recommendations for small
- and large-scale user moves to senior leaders
- Managing approved user moves, including establishing, overseeing and responding to requirements raised through Local Accommodation Committees.
- Forming effective working relationships with our many and varied stakeholders, internal and external to the department.
- Collaborating with others on property-related changes to work areas such as furniture changes and individual user moves.
- Provision of updates and reports on various aspects of the team’s work, including work point utilisation.
- Other property-related services as required.
The team works closely with internal staff and external contractors to fulfil the legislative requirements of managing Commonwealth tenancies, including our contracted Property Service Provider through the Property Services Coordinated Procurement Arrangements. In the first half of 2025 we are also working through transition of Property Services Providers.
**Duties and Responsibilities**
Responsibilities of the Assistant Director, Accommodation include but are not limited to:
- Leading, managing and mentoring a small customer focused team providing accommodation planning across multiple locations.
- Liaising with various business areas regarding their long
- and short-term accommodation needs.
- Arranging ‘business as usual’ or ad-hoc moves, or larger scale strategic block and stack activity, as required.
- Managing approved user moves, including establishing, overseeing and responding to requirements raised through Local Accommodation Committees.
- Procurement and contract management of services related to accommodation changes and/or user moves.
- Regular validation of staff numbers and accommodation requirements.
- Management and maintenance of the department’s desk booking system.
- Providing regular reports on and analysis of desk utilisation across our large, geographically dispersed property portfolio.
