This position will be located at the Curtin’s historic campus in Kalgoorlie - the home of the iconic WA School of Mines - located on the doorstep of the flourishing mining industry which offers strong opportunity for its staff and students to collaborate with the resources industry in the Goldfields region of Western Australia in not only traditional metalliferous mining but in the burgeoning battery minerals sector.

**Your new role**

An exciting opportunity exists for a Technical Specialist to join the Mining Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering team based at our Kalgoorlie campus. The position will primarily focus on supporting WASM-MECE activities. You will be responsible for providing technical support and associate services for teaching and/or research programs, and co-ordinate the day-to-day requirements of the laboratory, high-end analytical instrument support and pyrometallurgy experience.

In your new role of Technical Specialist, Metallurgy/Pyrometallurgy - WASM:MECE, you will provide specialised scientific and highly technical support and technical leadership in teaching and research programs which involve the operation and maintenance of highly specialised equipment and the provision of specialist scientific and technical skills.

You will play an important role in ensuring that occupational health and safety regulations and specific statutory requirements related to the area’s activities are followed. You will liaise with the Technical Operations Coordinator and ensure laboratory operations are properly resourced.

You will conceptualize and evaluate innovative techniques in the development and improvement of laboratory practicals and provide guidance on best practice for lab processes.

To support research activities, you will assist in preparing and conducting tests, identify faults and troubleshoot equipment, problem solve and develop solutions for testing protocols, calibrate and maintain experimental testing equipment, validate experimental results, process complex data sets with the advice from academic staff, report results and maintain records.

You will prepare materials and ensure laboratory facility resources are prepared in advance and well organised for teaching and research activities. You will supervise and provide technical instruction and guidance to staff and students, including guidance on the design and development of experimental processes using relevant equipment and will maintain general and specialized laboratories and equipment, undertaking safety checks, servicing, and repair.

**You will bring to the role...**
- A degree qualification relevant to Metallurgical Engineering; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Demonstrated experience in supporting metallurgical engineering.
- Demonstrated experience in handling and managing dangerous goods hazardous substances.
- Demonstrated organisational skills with experience in or the ability to manage the operational requirements of a small scientific facility, laboratory space or field station.
- Leadership experience, specifically managing a small team within a laboratory space.

On the job and external training will be offered as part of the professional development although prior experience working with analytical instruments such as ICP-OES, AAS, Master-sizer, UV-Vis, LECO elemental analyser and pyrometallurgy would be highly advantageous.
