**Who we are**
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals. These goals are to: -maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it -protect the Antarctic environment -understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system -undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance. The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard and McDonald Islands.
Antarctic Operations and Safety Branch plan, coordinate, facilitate and deliver operations for the Australian Antarctic Program by safely resupplying and sustaining the Antarctic Stations and building operational capacity to deliver future Antarctic projects.
The AAD’s Maritime Assets and Maritime Logistics sections jointly facilitate and administer the full scope of maritime activities for the AAD each season, encompassing:
- the provision of all shipping and watercraft capabilities for operations in the Antarctic, sub-Antarctic and the Southern Ocean,
- the planning, management and execution of voyages to deliver program outcomes as defined in each seasonal plan,
- the recruitment, training and deployment of specialist voyage management and watercraft operation personnel,
- the execution of responsibilities as ‘vessel owner’ for the RSV Nuyina on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia, including through the management and monitoring of all activities undertaken by Serco Defence as contracted Ship Manager,
- the execution of responsibilities as vessel owners, of the AAD’s commercial vessel fleet, including science workboats, IRBs/RIBs, jet barges and amphibious vessels,
- oversight of all vessel operation and lifecycle maintenance activities for the RSV Nuyina and the AAD’s commercial vessel fleet.
**The Job**
Key duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Contributing to the section’s coordination of and support for AAP maritime operations via:
- supporting the implementation of the AAD’s annual watercraft support program,
- coordinating the implementation of key tasks in support of the AAD’s shipping program,
- periodic reviewing of AAD watercraft operational instructions, vessel specific safety management systems, including identifying and implementing any required changes, supporting the planning.
- Implementation and administration of small vessel (watercraft) operations, including liaison with internal stakeholders, external agencies and contractors.
- Supporting planned and unplanned watercraft maintenance activities, safely operate a range of AAD watercraft and provide administrative support to AAD shipping section.
- Completing maintenance records for AAD vessels.
- Assisting with procurement of inventory and recommended spare parts required to maintain AAD watercraft and voyage support operations.
- Arranging logístical support for AAD vessels including transport and slipping services.
- Support the preparation of AAD watercraft for operation, regulatory inspections and operational deployment, including systems checks and verification along,
- Conducting vessel sea trials.
- Gathering and analysing information from diverse sources to develop and review key operational documentation which includes Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Risk Assessments, Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), business continuity plans and training manuals.
- Undertaking records management, procurement, and finance activities.
- Supporting, and where required delivery, of voyage management and watercraft operator briefing and training programs.
- Supporting planning for maritime operations and provide support to voyage management and watercraft operator teams.

- Proven experience on a range of domestic commercial vessels and maintenance of fleet vessels.
- Proven experience in procurement, financial and records management.
- Demonstrated experience in the development and delivery of briefing and training programs.
- Demonstrated stakeholder liaison experience.
- Demonstrated experience in the production of procedures and operating instructions.
